After last weekend's exeat, the sporting highlights have come thick and fast. We start with Cross-Country and an update of one of the things that really makes Lancing stand out amongst the competition; The League Run!
Cross Country
On Monday in the League Run, the college set another record for attendance with 306 pupils completing the event. Race times improved compared to the first week, with almost all of the runners completing the course inside the recommended time limit. There was tremendous competition at the head of the field, where Nick R just held off Ed G to win for the second week running. Molly McM was the first girl to finish. In the team competitions Second's and Manor continue to hold slender leads.
On Thursday, a minibus full of runners went up to Harrow to run round a very challenging course over many hills and through endless mud. Our first Junior runner was Henry S who ran well on his debut for the team. The Intermediates did extremely well to come second, beating both Winchester and Wellington who are extremely strong cross country schools. The victory over Winchester was the first for the college for many years and shows the potential that exists within the Cross-Country Club. There were excellent runs from Tim L, Tom W, Xavier C and Harry N. The Seniors were faced with a challenging 5 miles but also ran superbly well, to again come second out of five, with our top performances being from Ed G, Jack B and Nick R. Mr Brookes congratulates everyone who took part, and for their good humour on what turned out to be a difficult return journey!
Finally, congratulations to Billy Y who represented the school at the Sussex Championships at Lancing Manor on Exeat Saturday. Billy ran well in a high quality race to come in third for West Sussex.
Boys’ Hockey
With only one game this week for the Hockey club, the focus for the majority of teams has been dedication to training and match preparation. However, the U15A team made it two wins from two games as they recorded a resounding 8-1 victory against Sackville School. This marks a huge turn around from the result last year when they went down to the same team by 4 goals to 2. This age group in particular should be very pleased with the development that they are showing. Mr Ward has made an early claim for manager of the month!
Netball
Stars of the show this week have been the U14 age group. Against Brighton College on Tuesday, both teams got off to a good start but the scores were level at half time. The girls worked their hardest in the last quarter ending up as 11 - 4 victors. Player of the Match was Olivia A for her great passes and marking. They are awarded the "Team of the Week" accolade.
The U15 team have also been ‘producing the goods’ over the last two weeks. Against Ardingly, they played a blinding third quarter to level the scores and then ran away with the game in the final quarter to win 15 – 12. Player of the match was Olivia T for her excellent shooting when it really mattered. Against Eastbourne, the Colts started strongly and came out of the first quarter with a 6 – 4 lead. However from this point they let the game get away from them and found themselves reacting to the Eastbourne game rather than focusing on their own performance. The final score was 23 – 11 to Eastbourne but hopefully some useful lessons have been learnt. Player of the match was Helena F for her superb work as Goal Keeper.
The week has also seen the start of the Charity Netball and Football tournaments; reports will be published when the events are completed.
