Sporting Highlights - up to 25th June Print E-mail

It truly has been an international week at Lancing College. What with the World Cup and visiting South African Cricketers, there has been a great deal to catch the eye.

Before we start the main reports, we must extend huge congratulations to Enyseh T and Coco A for being selected to play for the Sussex NRG County Netball team. This is a major achievement for the girls and is the first time in a number of years that Lancing Girls have achieved this accolade. Thanks should also go to Miss Parkinson for giving the girls this opportunity.

Cricket
The tough fixtures just keep on coming for the Cricket Club. Eastbourne College were the weekend opponents and despite fielding well in all matches, our teams fell short due to a lack of runs. The batting highlight was a solid 41 made by Henry M in the U14A game.

In the 1st XI match, all of the first three Eastbourne batsmen made fifties. Sometimes you just have to sit back and applaud good run-making. The Cricket continued on this track this Wednesday when the 1st and 2nd XI teams entertained Rondebosch Boys High School from Cape Town. It was a complete lesson in how to craft an innings with two ‘Cubs’ players making centuries and the 1st XI scoring 271 from 30 overs. It was a pleasure to watch these boys play and we hope that our players learned a great deal from being on the same pitch as young Cricketers whose aims are to represent their country.

This week saw the return of the Junior House Cricket Competition. With all 5 Boys' Houses competing, the tournament saw a great deal of Cricket played.  In the final, Second's beat Head's by 22 runs. Second's Captain Cameron M carried his bat in the final scoring 47 not out. The results were as follows:
5th – Teme
4th – School
3rd – Gibbs'
2nd - Head's
1st - Second's

This weekend sees a block of fixtures against Portsmouth Grammar School. This means that the College come up against their future Director of Cricket, Raj Maru. We hope that all teams and players give a good account of what Lancing Cricket is about.

Rounders
The Rounders pitches continue to be exciting places to be this term, with the U14 team producing entertaining results. In their penultimate game of the season against Brighton College, Catie F was the top scorer but despite this the team could not hang on and lost 20 to 15½. In their last match, old rivals St Bede's were the opposition. A much harder match resulted in a high scoring loss. Well done to all the girls for being so dedicated this season.

Boys’ Tennis
On Tuesday, the U15 team continued their progress in the Aegon League against Angmering School. The match was very closely contested throughout. The singles matches produced a 2/2 draw. Honours were again even in the doubles rubbers, thus necessitating a final tie breaker. It came down to Michael S and Andy P to represent Lancing. Michael produced a number of outstanding shots in this tie breaker, bearing up extremely well under the pressure to give Lancing the overall victory. This was an excellent achievement by Michael with added credit for playing up a year. Yesterday, the roles were reversed, and unfortunately Lancing lost to a technically gifted Chichester High School on a tie break. The highlight of this game was produced by Florian J who, standing in at number one, came from 4-1 down to clinch the set 7-6.
