Sporting Highlights - Summer Term 2010 Print E-mail
Despite the fact that the summer term is the shortest, the College sports clubs have packed in an incredible 148 fixtures, not including house and cup competitions! The summer term break has surely been earned by the sportsmen and women of Lancing.

We start with an award held over from the sports dinner. The Richard Pithey Award for sporting development embodies all that is good in a Lancing pupil, one who tries their hardest to fulfil their potential, regardless of ability. The winner of this award in 2010 is Udara G.

Biathlon
The 2010 event gave the same ‘one-two’ finish as last year. Henry Y managed to take a second off his time from 2009, but still found himself just behind Tim L who won the race for the second year in succession, in a time only 20 seconds outside his own course record. The two second gap between Tim and Henry was the closest race that the Biathlon has seen. Callum M was third despite taking a fall in the slippery conditions.

Cricket
The Under 14A’s season has been a very mixed one, with the team achieving a place at the quarter finals of the Lords Taverners Cup but alas not producing this type of form in many other matches. Lancing won 7 games throughout the season with this being the first time that they had all played a season together. The pick of the batsmen was Henry M who achieved 200 runs this season, followed by AJ W with 187 runs and Nick B who picked up 176 runs. With the ball AJ picked up 10 wickets and Nick followed with 9 wickets. Particular mention must go to Henry M and Vandan P who put their all into the field throughout the whole season.

The Junior B team found the going tough this season, however a core of keen and enthusiastic players have kept them afloat. Led by Jack A, the team developed their skills in each game. There is promise in the squad coming from John dW, Gareth R and Alex Y. All of the squad should aim to play at a higher level next season.

The U15s had a mixed season. Ed C was the pick of the batsmen – he capped a decent season against Portsmouth GS with a fine hundred. Joel C also made useful runs, at the start of the season in particular. Peter R often looked solid and Rob C and Gus T made the odd timely contribution. Rob C bowled quickly but without finding rhythm or consistency. Joel C was the top wicket taker and proved able to trouble good players especially with the new ball. The fielding improved over the course of the season – Peter R took good catches and Cameron M became tidier behind the stumps. The highlight of the season was the Blackshaw Bowl semi-final win against Brighton which showed just what can be achieved – we look forward to more of this as the players graduate to senior cricket next season.

Under the leadership of Wilfred A, the 2nd XI recorded two early victories against King’s Rochester and Caterham. This was evidence of their strength with Max S in particular leading the way through his pace bowling and excellent batting. Victories became more difficult to find, but against Ardingly Ali H demonstrated some of the most powerful hitting that has ever been seen at that ground, with a devastating 47 off 23 deliveries, including 5 sixes. In his last game, against PGS, Wilfred made a captain’s innings of 44 but the team couldn’t match their total of 139. Mr Connolly would like to thank the boys and highlight the commitment given from the core players.

The story of the 1st XI season came in two halves. With six wins and only one defeat prior to half term (that being the Langdale Cup final against St Bede's) the team failed to win in June. Matches came in ‘halves’ but the two highlights of the season were beating Ardingly on their own turf to knock them out of the Langdale cup, and the 139 not out scored by Jamie B at PGS. Wisden qualifiers with the bat were Jamie B, Marco M, Johno C, Hector L and skipper George H. With the ball Jack B and George W excelled – Jack taking 15 wickets in all competitions and George taking 27. This puts George in the top 25 in Wisden, with Jack and Oscar R also qualifying for the great book. Thanks go to all the players and in particular to George H for his work as captain.

Half Colours are awarded to Glenn B, Marco M, Johno C, Jamie B and James S.
Full Colours are awarded to Jack B and George W.

1st XI Caps are presented to Jack B, George W, Marco M, Johno C, Jamie B, Glenn B, James B, James S, Hector L and George H.

Rifle Shooting
During the course of the term the rifle team has practised its form at Bisley shooting ground in Surrey. Shooting at long distance between 300 and 900 yards the team, under the leadership of Edward G has learnt to adapt to various weather conditions.

With three competitions during the early part of term, the team gelled well and held their own against some formidable competition. During the earlier competitions we were fortunate enough to win two sizeable silver trophies at the hands of Sebastian B and Franklin N. These victories followed on from the team of six winning their division in the British Schools Smallbore postal leagues between January and March.

During the summer the team will move onto camp at Bisley for four days to compete in the annual Schools Meeting where the elite of the UK’s shooting schools will vie for the impressive collection silverware available to winning teams. We wish them well especially the youngest member of the team 3rd former George W.

Rifle Shooter of the year and recipient of half colours is Edward G.

Rounders
It has been an exciting term for Rounders this year. Our senior team displayed a firm commitment to the game and managed to demolish Brighton, not once but twice in one afternoon. Other notable games include their one rounder loss to St Bede’s and their fabulous enthusiasm in playing two Seaford teams. The U14 team have been outstanding winning against Cranleigh, Ardingly, Christ’s Hospital and Hurstpierpoint. Similarly, the U15s have worked well as a cohesive group to accomplish some mighty victories against, Cranleigh, Ardingly and Hurstpierpoint with close matches against Brighton and St Bede’s. The most outstanding achievement was the U15 team grasping the title of Champions and overall winners in the Southern Schools Rounders League. They were clearly the most skilful team in the competition with many of the opposition coaches commenting on their sporting prowess!

Congratulations to Sankey’s for winning the junior house Rounders competition in stupendous form, with only eight players!!!

Boys’ Tennis
The U14 team has had only two fixtures this term. Against a strong Ardingly VI we played well with our first pair of Henry M and Reza T winning all three of their sets comfortably. Angus GT and Ben M-C also played well as a third pair winning two out of three sets to give us a 5-4 victory.

The U15 tennis team has had a mixed season. They got off to a slow start with defeats to Ardingly and Seaford, and then had an excellent match against Eastbourne College which went to the final rubber. Another defeat to a strong Steyning Grammar side was followed by the highlight of the season, which was an outstanding win in the Ardingly U15 Independent Schools Tennis tournament. The winning team consisted of Michael S, Andy P, Florian J and David M. All in all it was a season of continual improvement, and the squad has strength in depth which augurs well for next season.

The U16 Tennis team has performed well this season. The team were undefeated at the end of the first round of the Sussex Independent Schools League on the first Saturday of term. Josh F, Wilson L, Josh A-R and Harry N saw the team to second in  the final of the Sussex Independent Schools League finishing behind St Bede's.

The 2nd V1 have had a very limited fixture list which has given little chance to get a settled team and work on skills and tactics. They narrowly lost to Eastbourne 4-5 and then to Ardingly 3-6, early in the term, but have really improved since then and all bodes well for next year. All of the squad deserve praise for their commitment and enthusiasm.

This was potentially a difficult season for the 1st VI, with only one player left from last year’s top four. A number of stalwarts from last year’s squad stepped up and made the grade including Milan M and also Chris M returning to the fold from cricket! Dominic P and Roshan L came in as third pair. A real bonus was having 3rd former Michael S joining us and he played in the 1st pair for cup matches, partnering Captain James M. The team did exceptionally well to finish as Runners Up to St Bede’s in the Sussex League. Mrs Stone thanks all the players, but particularly James whose excellent play and leadership skills have contributed hugely to this year’s successes.

Half Colours are awarded to Chris M, Milan M, Dominic P.
Full Colours are re-awarded to James M.

Girls’ Tennis
The tennis season has been a mixed bag for the U14 team. The first pair of Olivia A and Charlotte D was a formidable duo who held their own and only suffered a handful of minor defeats. Sam B and Louisa R were also a force to be reckoned with. Highlights were the victories against Ardingly and Hurstpierpoint. The Third and Fourth pairs, Savannah A, Bea H, Megan H and Georgia W, have all improved magnificently over the season, with Savannah in particular showing great promise as a future player. Junior Girls Tennis at Lancing looks set to succeed next year.

The U15 girls have had a good season with lots of positives that can be built upon in coming years. The number one pairing of Esther C and Sophie M combined determination and skill in equal measure. The second pair of Annette W and Jasmine H were enthusiastic and played some very high quality tennis; Rebecca C and Olivia T, our third pair, were determined, focused and relentlessly positive. The highlight of the season was an impressive performance against Eastbourne College, comfortably winning their second fixture. All the girls are to be congratulated on their excellent attitude.

In competitive terms this has been a relatively short season, with a large number of exams and small number of fixtures. However, matches against Brighton College, Christ’s Hospital and Eastbourne College were tightly contested, and the 2nd round Aberdare Cup match against Burgess Hill brought out the best in our first and second pairs, Libby W and Enyseh T, Jocelyn S and Marina K, with Libby and Enyseh beating significantly higher ranked players.

Full Colours are awarded to Anna S and Gemma M.

Manor Cup
The finale of our tennis season for some years now has been the glorious Senior Manor Cup. A splendid afternoon’s tennis was once again achieved yesterday with special thanks to Mrs Stone who masterminded the event through her highly unconventional but extremely efficient scoring system.

60 pupils took part; all turned up looking smart, full of enthusiasm and ready to play good quality tennis. After playing 4 rounds of competitive tennis the final was a close match won by Enyseh T and Chris M against Libby W and George W. In the non-team section of the tournament Kate J and Max S were winners, with Emily C and Will G runners up. We were delighted to have Mr and Mrs Hill, the sponsors of the Manor Cup, with us this year to present the prizes of sports bags, hats and bandanas. Mr and Mrs Hill have generously sponsored this event in this way for the last 20 years and were pleased to see so many enthusiastic and capable tennis players playing so well during the afternoon.
