Field’s 1957-1961, President, Politician and Lawyer

His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the 5th President of Ghana’s 4th Republic.

He is a prominent champion of human rights, justice, freedom, and democracy in Ghana. As a lawyer, he undertook many of the country’s most important constitutional cases of the modern era – protecting the independence of the judiciary, the right of citizens to demonstrate without a police permit, and the right of equal access of all political parties to the state-owned media.

Nana Akufo-Addo has held numerous positions in the public life of Ghana; Attorney General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Foreign Affairs. He was elected as the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate in 2007. After a defeat in the 2008 presidential election, he also lost the 2012 election by the narrowest of margins. The NPP challenged the result with a petition at the Supreme Court and lost by a 5-4 verdict. Nana Akufo-Addo immediately accepted the decision, congratulated President Mahama, and called on all NPP supporters to unite under the new President.

This act of statesmanship brought him worldwide plaudits for preserving Ghana’s peace and maintaining her status as a beacon of democracy in Africa. The pinnacle of his career came in 2016 when he won the presidential election. He was sworn into office for a second term on 7th January 2021.

He has kept his association with Lancing throughout his life, especially when his grandson, nephew and two nieces followed here in his footsteps. He was delighted to visit and tour his old school in 2018 and join more than two hundred guests for a reception in his honour. He is grateful that Lancing allowed him to discover the importance of human relationships, and to develop his sporting prowess alongside his intellectual self.
