Matt Smith

Senior Housemaster, Common Room 1990

Matt Smith joined Lancing in 1990 and has been Housemaster of Gibbs’ since 2000. A graduate in Theology from Durham University, he has taught subjects including Religious Studies, English, Drama and Classical Civilisation. He is Senior Housemaster and Director of Drama. Every other July he can be found in Africa, leading a sizable group of Sixth Formers on the long-established Malawi Expedition, in between times he promotes fundraising for the College’s educational and healthcare projects in that country.

'Be it a boys’ boarding house, the company of a play or musical, a group of Malawi expeditioners, the warp and weft of the classroom, Lancing for me is about creating, nurturing and sustaining a dynamic, fruitful community. Figuring out who we are and what we can be. It has been my profession, pride, and privilege to play a part: working with, living and learning alongside, an inspirational panoply of pupils and peers. Gibbs’ House in particular has informed and enhanced my professional life, providing purpose, and meaning, and a great deal of joy. Much has changed materially across my 100 terms; fundamentally Lancing has always been a place of smiles and waves. There is a lot of laughter here. Opportunity and integrity too. Abiding faith. Folk get stuck in, and get stuff done.

I have had the time of my life'.
