Shell Mann

Sankey’s Matron

Michelle (fondly known as Shell) Mann’s original connection with the College came from her mother who grew up in the area and was always an admirer of the Chapel. Today she is delighted to see her daughter so much a part of the Lancing community.

Shell is known for her hard work, kindness and commitment to the students in her care. Her career at the College began as a laundry lady with cleaning duties in Second’s House. Three years later she was promoted to share the role of matron of Second’s House and her passion for working with young people became evident.

Shell’s particular skills and dedication led her to become the sole matron of Second’s House, and then in 2017, she took over a similar role in Sankey’s. This position allowed her to continue doing what she loved most – working with young people and watching them flourish. Shell finds personal fulfilment in supporting and spending time with the students, as well as managing her own family. Sankey’s feels like a second home to her, a place where she can truly be herself, surrounded by the beautiful views of the Downs and the sea.

Her job satisfaction comes from having a positive impact on the lives of the young people in the house as well as their families. She enjoys building relationships, seeing students develop over the years and helping them face the challenges that life can throw at them. Family is at the core of her values and the love and support she has received from her own family is reflected in caring deeply for the students in her charge. All of this means that her role in the College community is so much more than just a job for Shell.
