When did you join Lancing College?

I joined Lancing in September 2014, in the Fourth Form.

Which subjects did you study for A Level?

I studied Maths, Further Maths and Economics at A Level. I also took A Level Chinese as it is my native language, as well as additional Further Maths and Modern History for AS Level.

Where did you go to university and what did you study?

I studied BSc (Hons) Maths, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics (MORSE) at the University of Warwick. I then moved on to the University of Edinburgh to pursue a masters in Statistics with Data Science, from which I graduated in August 2022.

What are your plans for the future?

I am currently working as a stress testing analyst at Investec Bank, where I crunch numbers and build stress testing prototypes on Python for my team. I am learning something new every day, so far I have been really enjoying my job. My plan for now is to keep things the way they are and to strike a good work-life balance, a bit later down the line I will consider doing some professional qualifications to further my career prospects.

How has Lancing helped you get to where you are now?

Lancing helped me unearth my passion in statistics and realise my potential in a multitude of ways. The maths and economics departments at Lancing are fantastic, and in addition to clearly taught concepts and theory, the teachers made sure that we applied our knowledge to real-life scenarios. This prompted me to start thinking more analytically, and applying my knowledge in statistics and economics in tandem. These are some of the technical, analytical and problem-solving skills that I now use on my job daily, which Lancing played an instrumental part in helping me develop. Lancing also made me realise that there is so much knowledge to be explored, and learning truly never stops.

Furthermore, Lancing gave me the opportunity to play football regularly. Although my skill level in football wasn’t great, I was given the chance to represent the College, as long as I was willing. Lancing has great sports facilities, and the positive atmosphere encouraged me to continue my involvement in sport, at one point even putting me in charge of organising and running recreational football sessions! Going on to win Lancing Sports Personality of the Year award in 2018 was the icing on the cake. Moreover, I played in an orchestra for the first time at Lancing. These experiences outside of academia allowed me to develop my social skills, and I am grateful to Lancing for providing me with these opportunities.

In addition, I held a number of positions while at Lancing, such as House Captain and as a writer for various college publications, while representing my year in the student council. These positions enabled me to develop my leadership and communication skills, which are invaluable in the workplace today. I truly believe I have reaped the benefits from getting stuck in and actively contributing to the College- I left Lancing as a more well-rounded person than when I had joined.

Have you kept in touch with people from Lancing?

Yes, nearly five years on from leaving Lancing, still very much so! I still meet up with my best mates from Lancing every few weeks, if they are in London. I have also managed to catch up with other OLs from OL events organised by the College. I am delighted to have developed such an extensive network during my time at Lancing.
