All-round success in Hockey for Lancing

At Lancing we offer a diverse and rich range of sports; amongst those on offer, Hockey remains one of our most popular and successful. The strong cohort of Lancing pupils playing hockey at a competitive level serves as a testament to our experienced sporting staff, many of whom play or have played professionally.

This term we celebrate the successes of Sixth Formers Mabel W and Michael L. Both pupils play for the College’s respective Girls’ and Boys’ first teams, having developed their interest in hockey whilst at Lancing Prep Hove. As well as playing for the College, Mabel and Michael play for Brighton and Hove Hockey Club, where they have been recognised and commended for their game playing. Most recently Mabel played for Brighton and Hove’s Ladies 1st team in the county final against Horsham. Commenting on the experience, Mabel said: “Unfortunately we didn’t win, however competing for the Club alongside experienced players has really helped me develop and push myself.”

BHHC have also named Michael their Men’s Young Player of the Season. Discussing the accolade, Michael said: “I’m extremely grateful for the award as I was up against stiff opposition. I’m delighted that my performances this year have been recognised.”

In addition to our pupils’ accomplishments, Lancing’s Director of Hockey Joe Naughalty has been voted National League Conference East Player of the Season, following an extraordinary scoring streak for BHHC. Speaking about the award, Mr Naughalty said: “I am extremely proud to be receiving this award, having scored 25 goals in 18 league matches. This complements my recent appointment as Brighton and Hove’s Assistant Coach, which is an exciting new challenge.” Mr Naughalty’s ascent to best in the league is unsurprising to many at the College, where his expertise plays an integral role in developing many of our pupils’ hockey skills. Both Mabel and Michael have worked closely with Mr Naughalty on their technique, and have both benefitted from personalised training in Lancing’s newly refurbished gym. Michael adds: “Under the guidance of Mr Naughalty I have significantly improved as a player; he has helped me assess the game better and developed my confidence on and off the pitch.”

Our pupils’ success both in and outside of the College reflects Lancing’s all-round approach to sporting opportunity, with Mr Naughalty noting: “It is great to see Lancing pupils benefiting from the links we have with BHHC. I see a growing number of pupils from the College and Lancing prep schools at BHHC training sessions and matches, and I hope this excellent relationship can continue to grow.”
