Celebrating Lunar New Year 2022

At the beginning of February the MFL Department hosted the first Chinese New Year’s party since the start of the pandemic. Kristy W and Vivi L, Lower Sixth, wrote: 'The year 2022 is the year of the Tiger in the Chinese calendar. It was a fantastic and unforgettable night for all of us, with pupils and teachers gathering around to celebrate this event. The night started with fabulous Chinese cuisine including spring rolls, Chinese fortune cookies and various fruits, followed by pupils performing traditional Chinese dance, popular Chinese music and beatboxing. Some of us even turned on the flashlights and joined the singers! We also enjoyed the game sections in between.'

The tradition of 'reunion' is very important in Chinese culture. It was pleasing to see people from different countries enjoying this event. This was a great opportunity that allowed us to learn about and enjoy Chinese culture, making Lancing a diverse and wonderful community for the students from different backgrounds.

As part of the new year celebrations, Field’s House hosted a dumpling making session. About 40 students from all the Houses attended; they learnt how to make dumplings and also found out more about Chinese customs.

Fifth Former Audrey N writes: 'My friends and I went to Field’s House to learn how to make dumplings from scratch. We started by adding the filling inside the wrapper and sealing it properly, this took us quite a while to master as we were either putting too much filling at once or not pinching the side of the wrapper correctly. Despite a difficult start we managed to make some decent looking dumplings that, we all agreed, look restaurant worthy. While we were folding dumplings we also chatted, comparing each other’s specialty food and stating the similarities between them. Then came the cooking part: we put the dumplings in boiling water and cooked them until they started to float onto the surface. We might have slightly overlooked the first batch but we got the hang of it eventually. The taste of the dumpling was amazing on its own but they tasted even better in combination with a special spicy sauce made by Jack.

It was a wonderful experience, we all had a great time learning about dumpling making and spending time with one another.'
