EYLA visit Lancing for summer school

At the end of August, 17 young students and two members of staff from Eastside Young Leaders' Academy travelled from London to enjoy a three-day boarding school experience at Lancing.

The programme was much anticipated by pupils and staff alike, with College staff giving up their time to assist in providing a memorable and life-changing experience for the children who would not otherwise be able to spend time with the freedom and support that the College is able to provide.

This year the fun-filled programme offered several semi-structured days, enabling the students to get a feel of the full boarding life. Lessons and activities included maths, metacognition, an amazing electronics project where students went home with their own illuminating creation, musical theatre and debating. The daily sessions also included workshops on being a good leader, making positive first impressions, enjoying reading, and learning how to lay up a table for a formal dinner. Pupils also enjoyed a full tour of the College Farm and the Chapel, went swimming and played basketball and football. The week ended with a walk to Shoreham beach for a supper of pizza and ice cream.

EYLA has had a strong relationship with Lancing College since 2017, when their first students arrived at Lancing at the start of the Foundationers Campaign. This year the College has six of their students within our Foundationers programme. Last year our first graduate from EYLA – also a School Prefect at Lancing – has gone on to study Economics at Aston University.

EYLA, Eastside Young Learners’ Academy is based in East London. Working closely with schools, community partners and families, their aim is to create leaders of character and purpose for tomorrow’s world, drawn from those most in need in grass roots communities.
