Fifth Formers join Online Careers Fair

At the beginning of November the whole Fifth Form took part in the Careers Fair, an annual engagement where our pupils can listen to and meet a wide range of speakers to gain an insight into various career choices.

This year’s Fair was held online due to the current circumstances linked to COVID-19. The modern technology, however, allowed us to connect our pupils, sitting at home or in Boarding Houses, with a number of speakers joining online from various parts of the UK. Pupils could choose up to four 45 minute sessions, on career areas including Arts & Media, Banking, Civil Service, Charity, Engineering, Financial Services, Information Technology & Data, Law, Marketing Medicine, Science, Sport, and Teaching. There were also sessions on Overseas Universities and Degree Apprenticeships; and the undecided were offered some broad advice in the session ‘What to do when you don’t know what to do’.

Amongst the speakers, we were delighted to welcome: Chloe Barter OL, who gave advice on Medical school applications and a career in Medicine; Lancing Prep Worthing’s Head, Heather Beeby, who discussed opportunities offered by a career in teaching; and Marisa Amato OL, who talked about the different ways to get involved in Science. Parents and former parents were also highly valuable expert guest speakers in Law and the Charity sector.

'I would like to thank you for organising everything this week! It has all been very helpful and I definitely feel I can take a lot from all the sessions.'  Fifth Form pupil

Guidance on careers will continue this November for the Sixth Form with the Careers in Depth seminar.

The programme My Future, which includes the annual Careers Fair, is designed to offer support and advice to our pupils at an important time in their life. The programme starts in the Third Form, where pupils are given the opportunity to explore the world of work and life skills during their weekly PSHE sessions. Fourth Formers are offered a full programme of career profiling and advice, including how to write a CV; and in the Fifth Form, prior to their GCSEs and A Level choices, pupils complete their Morrisby profiling and attend the Careers Fair. Parents are also encouraged to be part of the programme as active participants and advocates.
