Lancing College Scout Leader Helps Spark Global Campfire Event

This June, scout groups across the world are gathering around campfires as part of Flamboree - a heartwarming initiative that celebrates one of the most cherished traditions in scouting.

Spearheaded by Lancing College’s very own scout leader Andy Cooper and a fellow scout from Worthing, the Flamboree brings together communities near and far to enjoy the simple joys of campfire life, from cooking and storytelling to songs and s’mores.

Locally, the Minerva Explorers hosted an unforgettable evening under the stars, joined by the Spitfires from Henfield and the Worthing Young Leader Team. The night was filled with laughter, music, hot chocolate, and plenty of marshmallows!

It was on my return from our Explorers trip to Kandersteg International Scout Centre last summer that something truly shifted for me. I had always known that scouting was more than just weekly meetings and local adventures — but in Kandersteg, I experienced the true fellowship of global scouting.

Each evening, as the sun dipped behind the mountains, we gathered around a campfire. Not just our own unit, but scouts from every corner of the world — different languages, uniforms, and traditions, yet all united by the same spirit. We shared stories, sang songs, swapped badges, and laughed late into the night. Our Explorers formed friendships that have lasted far beyond the trip, staying in touch with scouts from across the globe. It was a reminder that scouting is a worldwide family — and the campfire is its heart. One night, we joined an international campfire with over 500 scouts. Sitting shoulder to shoulder, singing together, and even leading songs ourselves — it was a moment of pure connection. That night, the idea for Flamboree was born.

I wanted to find a way to bring that same magic to scouts everywhere — to create a shared experience that didn’t require travel, just a spark of imagination and a warm fire. So, we came up with the idea of a “host your own campfire” event. A way for groups, sections, and districts to celebrate the spirit of scouting in their own way, while still feeling part of something bigger. We launched Flamboree just before Christmas, and the response has been incredible. As of this month, nearly 200 events have been registered across the globe — from local scout huts to international jamborees. Each one is lighting a fire, sharing photos and videos, singing songs, and yes — collecting the official Flamboree badge!

Last weekend, we officially launched the first Flamboree event, and I’ve already completed my second. And fittingly, I’ll be returning to Kandersteg at the end of June to host another — bringing the journey full circle. Flamboree is more than just a campfire. It’s a celebration of unity, tradition, and the joy of shared experiences. It’s proof that even when we’re miles apart, we can still come together — around the fire.
