It’s been an action-packed beginning of term at Lancing, with the Netball and Boys' Hockey Clubs commencing their respective competitive seasons.
The 1st XI started its campaign in fine style with a solid 4-0 victory over KES Witley. Winning 1-0 at half time, the team pulled away in the second half to add three more. Goals were scored by Joe H, Luke H and two from Ollie J. MVP was Michael L.
The seven fixtures against Lingfield brought four wins and three losses. The U15B team was the only squad to win away, and well done to Dylan B for some excellent goalkeeping in the 1-0 win. Nikita P grabbed a goal on debut. The 3rd XI won 2-0 in fine style. Goals here were scored by Keith I and Will B. This goal kept up Will’s record of scoring in every game he has played in. MVP was Jonny W. The 2nd XI produced an excellent display in its 3-2 win with all goals coming from MVP Max L. To finish the block, the 1st XI won 3-0 with goals coming from Joe H, Ollie J and Georgia T. MVP was Owen M.
The U15A team played local rivals Blatchington Mill. Goals here were scored by MVP Alden M (2) and a brace from Ted E. These very positive results mean that the Club is in good shape as we approach exeat, having won 60% of its games.
The Netball Club has already played 19 matches this season. Despite some of the games against Worth falling to the weather, the girls still played five and won four across the block.
The U14A team lost the first quarter 4-5, but thanks to some amazing interceptions by Amelia G and Phoebe P, as well as steady play down court and consistent shooting in the D, the team came away with a well-deserved 22-15 win. Player of the match was Amelia G.
In the U15A game, Tiana F played well helping transition the ball from defence to attack. Along with this, Hannah G put up some excellent shots. The team should be proud of its performance, and a special mention goes to Girl of the Game, Abby H.
The most emphatic win came for the 1st VII. Excellent defensive work from Sophie W and Amelia L-W gave the team a 20-7 lead at half time. The girls went from strength to strength after the break to win 38-13. It was an excellent team performance, with Girl of the game being Anna F for her consistent shooting. This excellent set of results takes the win percentage of the Netball Club to 58%.
The Club took on Ardingly College in 10 matches. It was a successful block, with Lancing winning four matches. The girls scored 163 goals, with the biggest margin of victory coming from the U14C team. In its 21-13 win, MVP was Natasha M.
The U15C team won 12-9 with the MVP being Isabella A; the U15B team won 17-11 (MVP Tiana F); and the 2nd VII fought hard to grab a 31-27 win. This was the ‘game of the day’ with the lead being exchanged a number of times. By half time, the strong defensive work of Vira V and Louise H enabled Lancing to take back possession of the ball, and with good shooting from MVP Liubov V, Lancing took a lead that was never surrendered.
The 1st V started the season with an away win at Rikkyo, followed by a very narrow home defeat to Michael Hall. In the next match away at Bede’s, our players displayed excellent defensive skills, leading 34:10 after the first two quarters. With continued resilience and technical superiority over the home team, the game ended 62:39 to Lancing with everyone in the team putting their names on the scoreboard. 15 points were scored by Michail M, 14 by Jacky L and 10 by Jack S. Very well done on a much deserved win!
Against Eastbourne at home, a flurry of wins saw the Lancing swimmers catch our visitors. Lancing then won the cannon relay in splendid style by half a length, but finished the match one point behind Eastbourne. Captain Jeff L won the Senior Boys’ 100m Individual Medley and 50m Backstroke races. Captain Hannah E won the Senior Girls’ 100m Individual Medley and 50m Freestyle races. The Boys' Senior team of Jeff L, Nigel W, Miles H and Max H won the freestyle relay and John-Paul M swam final 50m Freestyle leg of the Senior Medley relay in a new PB of 29 seconds. In the Junior Boys’ Freestyle relay, Ben B, Ethan A-H and Cameron K swam PBs, but special mention goes to Will P who, on his first outing for the team, won the 50m Breaststroke! Well done to all the swimmers.
This term we also hosted our annual Midwinter Prep Schools' Swimming Gala, with a record eight schools and 30 teams entered! We thank all who helped with the smooth running of one of our largest events.
It has been a big week for our runners; we took on the might of the 6-mile course for the Knole Run. This is a huge event that attracts 40 schools. Paul H was our first runner home, with Oliver Y running extremely well. This was followed on by the Sussex Championships, where Paul was our first Senior runner home, and Finn H did the same for the Juniors.
The 1st XI concluded its league campaign with a 2-1 won over Ibstock Place. Under lights at Culver Road, the team produced a good first half performance, and goals were scored by Will B and Elian C, with Luke H being voted as MVP. This means the team finishes fifth, with only two losses all season. The last time the team was beaten was in mid-October!
The Squash Club travelled to Eton for its annual block; team of the day was the U14 quartet who won 4-1. Debut victories came from Ollie C, Alice C, Isaac P and Thor R.
