Sporting Highlights - 11 May 2018

It has been a very good week for the Hockey Club. On Saturday, Mabel W will represent Brighton HC first team in the Sussex Cup Final against Horsham. This is a great achievement for Mabel, playing at adult level.

We also congratulate Michael L who, last week, was voted Brighton Hockey Club's Young player of the Year. Michael fought off stiff opposition – some from the first team – to win this accolade. To cap this, our own Director of Hockey Mr Joe Naughalty was voted as England Hockey MHL East Player of the Season, after topping the scoring charts.

In the second round of the Diamond League at K2 in Crawley, Bupi M won the 100m in fine style, setting a meet record of 12.59s. Favour N came in second in the shot put, an event in which she has only recently starting training. Her best throw was 7.39m. Furthermore, congratulations to everyone that competed and showed support for all athletes in the blazing sun.

Lancing Girls played their first match in the U15 league on Friday against Warden Park. After putting the opposition in to bat, Lancing’s tight fielding, featuring some outstanding catching, restricted Warden Park to 67, with Maya R in particular bowling very tidily. MVP Alice C (38 not out) led the Lancing reply, and after the loss of two early wickets, she and Hannah G saw the home side to victory in just 10 overs.

The 1st XI progressed to the Langdale T20 Cup semi-finals after a six wicket win over Ardingly on Tuesday. Best with the ball was Matthew L who took 3 for 28. With the bat, captain Ollie J top-scored with 43. The team now faces Bede's next week for a place in the County Final.

The Lancing Swimming Team put in an exhilarating performance against Charterhouse and Cranleigh last week and gained a steady stream of 1st and 2nd places. Sumin K won the U16 50m Butterfly by a large margin and Ben B gained a respectable 2nd in all his events. Charlie B achieved a PB in the 100m freestyle while Captain Jeff L won two individual events and, with Nigel W, led the Senior team to victory in two relays. Finally, Charlie B and Luca I-R pulled out all stops to ensure the Senior boys’ team retained their usual first place in the relays.

Last Saturday the Junior boys' AEGON team, made up of George N, Finn R, Will C and Dylan B, won 8-4 against Hurst with George, Finn and Will all winning their singles matches. George and Finn secured the win by beating the Hurst top pair in their doubles match.

On Tuesday the U14A team mentioned above were joined by Ollie C, Niklas J and Felix U. They then duly won 6-3 against Brighton College. As a pair, George and Will won all three matches. The U15A lost 3-6 to Brighton, but special mention goes to Henry H and Charlie L who won two of the team's three matches.

The girls fared much the same, showing fantastic grit and determination to beat Brighton College by 5 matches to 4. The team of Rosie H, Ruby B, Kitty P and Georgia M were excellent throughout.
