Sporting Highlights – 13 September 2019

It has been a busy start to the term for our sports players and already six matches have taken place. A big thank you to both coaches and players for the excellent preparation and enthusiasm shown in the first two weeks.

Congratulations must go to Isabel A, who last week was again selected for the county netball squad. We look forward to hearing how she progresses this year.

Rifle shooting
Over the summer, 12 members of our shooting club competed in the annual schools competition. Led by captain Tim Clifford (now an OL) the team shot hundreds of rounds over four days. Several of the team also took part in a new event known as 'Target sprint' – a summer version of the Winter Biathlon – which entails 400m sprinting entwined with shooting intervals. Congratulations to Loren P and Mr Coakes for their medals in these events!

Overall the team was placed 12th in the main Asburton Shield Competition.

Hockey
130 girls have trained on the astro already this term, in what promises to be a competitive season. Our U15 hockey players faced Bede's on Tuesday and although both teams lost, there were lots of promising play.  MVPs were Erin R for the Bs and Sophie L for the As. Our full block is against Lingfield on Saturday 14 September, and we wish all teams the best of luck.

Football
The Football Club has had an excellent start to the season with the 1st XI, U15A and U14A teams all in action. The U14A produced a superb performance against Charterhouse in the league on Tuesday. Goals from George C and Will P gave the team a 2-1 half time lead, but Charterhouse came back strongly in the second period and took the game 4-2. MVP Harry S went close late on with a stunning free kick but all players should be congratulated on their patience and hard work.

The U15A team also played the Carthusians in the league and ran out 6-3 winners. Despite going behind, goals from Henry H, Sam B on debut, Rocco G, Nana O-N and two from MVP Ozzy R sealed a comfortable victory. This team has now only lost once in over a year; let’s keep this going!

A week ago, the 1st XI took on the Adult team that raises money for the Rocking Horse Children’s Charity. In what was a blistering attacking display the team ran out 13-1 winners. Goals came from MVP Isaac A (6) Barney H (2) Charles L, Bader J and Marvin Y with a debut hat-trick. This shows the firepower in the College side this season.

The club takes on Wellington College on Saturday 14 September, as well an internal game for the 4th and 5th teams. With nearly 200 pupils playing in the Advent Term programme we would welcome any girls who wish to join as teams can be very much mixed.

Good luck to all representing the College this weekend in football and hockey, and also to the cross-country team travelling to Charterhouse.
