Sporting Highlights - 14 January 2022

Sport kicked off with a bang last Friday 7 January, with the return of the League Run.

Over 220 pupils and almost 10 staff braved the weather conditions and completed the race. There were super times at the front and some excellent performances from pupils from lower year groups.

First boy home was Fourth Former Max W, in a time of 10:29, closely followed by Fin S, also in the Fourth Form, just 4 seconds adrift. Joe C was a close third, and Max S from the Third Form was a very creditable sixth.

The first girl home was Grace S, again from the Fourth Form, in a time of 12:57.

There are early leads in the team competitions for Second's (just 4 points ahead of Teme) and Sankey's (just 1 point ahead of Manor).

On Saturday 8 January, the Boys' Hockey 1st team faced a tough start playing a cup match against Ardingly, which included three England players. Nonetheless, Lancing played superbly and matched them in open play, with Harry S causing Ardingly a lot of problems. Unfortunately, the defensive set piece let the team down and Ardingly were composed in front of goal, resulting in a 6-1 loss. We look forward to a re-match later in the season.

The U14A team suffered a 1-0 loss in the final minutes, but are showing promise for the season ahead; the U15As suffered a 4-1 defeat, and are looking to bounce back this Saturday 15 January against Lingfield College after a good week of training; and the 3rd team fought hard for a draw against the KES Witley 1st team, with some fantastic stops by goalkeeper James N.

And finally, team and coach of the week; Mr Watson’s 2nd XI - producing what would be seen as the ‘Great Escape’. After being 2-0 down, Lancing College showed grit and determination to get themselves back into the game making it 2-2, with James S hitting in the winner from close distance: 3-2 to Lancing! A special mention must also go to Ollie L who saved a penalty flick in the second half.

The first football action of the Lent Term saw a mixed Senior football team run out comfortable 5-1 winners over Whitgift School. An excellent performance which included a hat-trick from man of the match George C, as well as goals from Henry H and Joseph K allowed Lancing to gain their first victory of the term.

Elsewhere, our U16s' unbeaten run came to a disappointing end this week as they lost their National Cup football match with Buckswood. Despite a below par performance on the day, they can be proud of their efforts throughout the competition and will hope to learn from their experiences.
