Sporting Highlights - 14 May 2021

We start by congratulating Thomas C-F who has been formally awarded his ‘cap’ for representing Sussex County in shooting. Having shot three fullbore competitions with Sussex since Easter, he was selected and shot the King George V match. Sussex came second in the heat (8 points behind Surrey).

Cricket
On an overcast day last Thursday, the Lancing Cricket 2nd XI played Brighton College. The boys got off to a good start with Ethan F making excellent bowling decisions, resulting in Brighton College being 21-2 off 5 overs. A special mention must go to James S and Ben M-S for their excellent bowling spells. After some crucial moments swinging Brighton College’s way, they pushed on and scored 185 runs for 4 wickets. Lancing College went into bat with a lot of positivity, with Ben M-S hitting 18 runs off 19 balls. Isaac A also contributed with the bat scoring 30 runs off 29 balls. Lancing’s final score was 75 short, scoring a total of 110 runs for 8 wickets.

The 1st XI started their season with a cup match against Brighton College this week. Brighton got off to a quick start, with some great batting on display from both their openers. It took until the 15th over for Lancing to get the breakthrough. Lancing began to apply lots of pressure, and a special mention must go to Ozzy R, who on the day took 4 wickets, 3 of those coming in the 17th over. Mentions must also go to Thomas B and Rocco G, who both took some fine catches and wickets themselves. Brighton finished on a total of 186. Lancing then came into bat and managed to put up a great fight in knocking up 116.  Rocco G knocked-up a quickfire 28 and Barney Hall scored 40. MOTM goes to Ozzy R for his excellent and tight bowling.

Tennis
The U15 boys were in action this week competing in the LTA Youth Schools League; having received a walk over from Brighton College on Monday, the 15Bs faced Bede's on Tuesday narrowly losing out 4-2. MVP was awarded to Artemii B for winning both his singles and doubles matches. The 15As continued their winning streak, beating Brighton College 6-0 on the Monday and Bede’s 5-1 on the Tuesday. The boys now face Hurst and Cardinal Newman in the remaining league cup matches.

Football
It has been a memorable week for the Girls’ football teams, as they made their first ever outing for Lancing College on Tuesday, travelling to Bede's. Both teams started nervously and allowed the Bede's players to dominate but as play went on, the girls found their confidence and started to play some really good football. Mimi W scored the goal for the U14s and Lucy T scored a cracker for the Seniors.

Next week the Seniors travel to Ardingly to play in a 6s tournament, and then the girls have a return fixture against Bede's just after Half Term.
