Sporting Highlights - 15 March 2019

This week we celebrate another excellent performance from Jonah B. Last weekend he won the BU15 English Championships in Hull – an outstanding achievement which resulted in Jonah being crowned U15 National Champion a year young, as an U14 player.

In the 1st team rematch games against Eastbourne College, Lancing won 14 out of 17 matches to breeze past the opposition. For the girls, Avery K and Florence L won all their matches; their last match was comprehensively won 21-8. Similarly for the boys, Owen C and Anthony L won all of their matches. Ryan N, Shuyan W, Brad M and Karl L won their comeback games. One particular highlight was Kyron S's 11-4 singles win against Eastbourne's number one player. MVP was Ritchie L.

Last Saturday the Cross-Country Club took part in the Ranelagh Cup in Richmond Park. Below is a report from Anna S, who won the girls race.

“We are very grateful to Mr Brookes for choosing such a beautiful cross-country course, with lots of wild deer and ponds on the route. Despite the fact that it was a challenging and long run, there was no doubt that we enjoyed every single hill. Our girls’ team beat a major record as, for the first time in Lancing history, the team took the first five places in its race. Anna S came first, Laura P second, and Daryna T finished third. The boys placed 3rd against the tough competition of Judd and RGS, with Freddie B placing 14th and Alex E and Harry F both placing in the top 25. It was a fantastic end to a fantastic running season!“

Last Saturday the College hosted a block fixture against Roedean. The U15B girls had an impressive 21-8 win, being particularly strong in attack. MVP was Kitty P.
The U14A team dominated throughout to win 27-3. MVP was Marina C, with brilliant shooting from Izzy H and Poppy S.

This was a particularly sweet weekend for Miss Andrew (Lancing's Head of Academic PE, formerly at Roedean) whose 2nd VII beat Roedean 36-12. This game proved more challenging than anticipated but as the game progressed Lancing started to take control. Fantastic performances at either end came from Pomme J and Jade B who both worked incredibly hard to maintain momentum.

This winning streak was added to by a 38-23 win for the 1st VII. The team led from the beginning and great zoning meant the team achieved some brilliant turnovers and interceptions and showed how hard work in training pays off. Joint MVPs went to Mabel W and Molly C-H.

It has been another excellent week for the Hockey Club. The weekend block against KES Witley brought victories for the U14A team as well as the 1st XI, and also a hard-fought 2-2 draw for the U15A team. In this game, the team started slowly with KES on the front foot and playing some aggressive and fast attacking play. This pressure led to two penalty strokes that were well taken. After going 2-0 down Lancing came alive, fighting for every ball and starting to win the midfield battle. Just before half time Ollie F picked the ball up in a wide position and drove along the baseline and found Louis J-Q for a simple tap in to make it 2-1. The second half was all Lancing, some excellent attacking play by George D-B, Louis and Thomas B kept the KES players on their toes. The inevitable equaliser came from a short corner, with Thomas smashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner. Despite the efforts the Lancing boys could not find a winner, and the game finished as a very entertaining 2-2 draw. MVP was Will C for his solid performance intercepting from the defence.

For the U14s the goal scorers were Brook L, Jamie C and Henry H. MVP was Rocco G in goal.

The 1st team completed a third win in a row against a hard-working KES side. Despite the performance not being of the highest quality the Lancing boys had the majority of the possession and got the breakthrough late in the first half when Elian C swept the ball home. Much of the same in the second half led to a few nervy moments, but MVP Matt L kept the KES attackers at bay. It was Elian again who sealed the victory with a composed finish into the bottom left corner, to finish the game 2-0. Those two goals take Elian clear as the boys' section's top scorer, with 8 goals.

The U15A team then made it an unbeaten week with another impressive second half performance against Sackville. Trailing 1-0 at the break, goals from George D-B and two from Thomas B secured a really good win. MVP was Seb O.
