Sporting Highlights - 17 September 2021

It was great to see our sportsmen and women representing Lancing last Saturday, and what a weekend of sport!

Football

The football teams all played Wellington College in what proved to be an extremely successful start to the season. In front of a lively home crowd, our Senior 1st and 2nd XI both ran out 3-2 winners in two fiercely competitive encounters, whilst our 3rd XI partook in a highly entertaining 4-4 draw. The U14A team lost narrowly by 3 goals to 1, but the Team of the Day were the U15As, who beat Wellington 8-2. An impressive performance from Isaiah S saw him pick up the Star Player of the Week award after scoring a remarkable FIVE goals on his Lancing College debut.

Following the highs of the weekend the U14 and U15 A teams played against Charterhouse on Tuesday, in the Elgin Capital League. Unfortunately, both teams experienced heavy defeats but should be commended for their resilience and perseverance. Lots to work on moving forward but also very exciting as both teams showed huge potential.

Hockey

In hockey the 1st and 2nd teams played Lingfield College. The 1st team lost 6-0 and looked unsettled in the first half, struggling to deal with a couple of highly skilled opposition players. The second half showed huge improvements, as the team created plenty of goal scoring opportunities, but sadly failed to convert at least five clear chances! A special mention must go to Poppy S for her versatility and performance in defence, as well as Tess W for making some outstanding saves.

The 2nd team drew 0-0 and showed plenty of promise. Lancing played well from the back and produced plenty of opportunities in front of goal, but once again we failed to find the net. A special mention must go to Indie S who was superb in the middle, and was the heartbeat of the team’.

The 3rd XI were in action at home on Thursday against Hurstpierpoint College. This was an exciting encounter with lots of end-to-end play. Hurst took their chances in the first half and scored three quick goals, but Lancing didn’t give up and a goal just before half time by Iyana P lifted the team. We scored quickly in the second half with a breakaway goal from Evie V-B. At this stage it was all to play for and Hurst were looking rattled. Fitness unfortunately let us down towards the end and Hurst scored two goals in the last five mins to make it 5-2. Player of the match was Riva S.

This weekend promises to be another exciting encounter for our sports players. We wish the footballers luck against Bede's and the hockey girls against Hurst.
