Sporting Highlights - 20 May 2022

We start by congratulating Jayden H who recently won the Sussex LTA Tennis Young Person of The Year Award, which put him through to the Regional Award ... which he also won! He is now one of seven who have been nominated for the National Award which will be announced any time soon.

Football
Both Senior and Junior Girls' football teams were in action over the past week with tough fixtures against Worth and Ardingly. Saturday saw the 1st XI Girls show huge progress, with a well organised and hardworking team performance. Despite losing a close game there were a lot of positives to take away, including some excellent defending from captain Lucy T and a standout out performance from stand-in goalkeeper Sophie W.

The U15 girls were also in action on Tuesday this week. Despite an improved second half performance in which Lancing created numerous chances they fell to defeat against an exceptional Ardingly.

Tennis
This week the U15 boys played in two LTA League matches. The Division 1 boys secured wins against both Hurst and Eastbourne with captain George H winning all four matches across both days. The Division 2 boys obtained an equally satisfying 10-2 win against Hurst on Monday, with Lucas B, Loui G, Matthew B and Rory H all winning their singles matches, and Matthew and Sutirith winning their doubles 6-2 to take the overall win.

Last Saturday the Lancing Tennis Club took on Ardingly College. The Senior Boys continue their winning streak obtaining a confident 7-3 win, with doubles duo George N and Jayden H maintaining their full sweep of the season. Some cracking doubles was also played by Will C and Ollie C, who will also be stepping up as no.1 seed in the upcoming block fixture against Brighton College.

Our Senior Girls also fought hard, with Pia v W making her debut in the 1st team and Dottie C receiving MVP for her performance in both the singles and doubles. The girls eventually drew 5-5 and finished the afternoon with some entertaining mixed doubles.

The Junior Boys and Girls travelled away to Ardingly where the U14 girls narrowly lost out 4-5 (despite some incredibly hard-fought matches throughout), and the U15 girls won 3-1. The Junior Boys also had some very close matches with the A team taking on the U15 Sussex Champions and drawing 3-3, and the Bs losing out 5-1.

Cricket
The Senior Girls' cricket team played their first competitive hard ball cricket on Saturday at home against Seaford. Batting first, Lancing’s innings was masterminded by vice-captain Rebecca H who played an outstanding knock of 45 not out, with some elegant leg glances and astute placement of the ball. With the ball, captain Poppy S bowled with pace and accuracy, notching up a double wicket maiden. The game went right down to the penultimate ball and the girls demonstrated an excellent team spirit throughout, boding well for their next game against Worth.

Last Saturday the Cricket Club played in a tough block against Seaford College. The 2nd XI hit 115 runs off 25 overs. Teddy B hit 49 runs with some cameo batting performances from Tom S and Ethan G. Unfortunately, Seaford chased the runs down in 15 overs, A special mention must go to Will B who took a brilliant 1 handed catch at covers.

On Thursday, Lancing was unfortunately knocked out of the Hundred Cup by Hurst. Lancing scored 118 with Ben M S scoring 48. This score looked positive; however Hurst chased the runs down with 20 balls spare.
