Sporting Highlights - 23 June 2023

A big week for tennis and cricket last week.

We start the report with the highly anticipated Girls' House Cricket.

Tuesday afternoon saw all Houses represented in what can best be described as a bombastic festival of boundaries and wickets. There was an impressive array of hard hitting and tight bowling. A round robin format culminated in a tight final match between Field’s House and Sankey’s House, with Handford/Saints’ (mixed team) v Manor in a Third/Fourth play-off.

  • 4th – Handford/Saints’ – 3 points
  • 3rd – Manor – 5 points
  • 2nd – Field’s – 7 points
  • 1st – Sankey’s – 9 points (winning all 3 games!)

In the Boys’ House Cricket event, the Junior and Senior matches were also very competitive.

With Head's House just edging the win against Teme in the Junior competition to take the victory. and also taking the win against School in the Senior competition, Head's House take the double!

In Saturday’s block against Worth our Senior Girls travelled away to play a 20 over match. Progressing to a hardball format from the previous encounter, Lancing batted first accruing 139-5 from their allotted overs. Harriet B thumped her way to 4 runs short of Lancing’s first ever 'Girls’ Fifty', getting out for 46. She was ably supported by India M (18) and captain Poppy S closed out the innings with a hard-hitting 30 not out. Lancing remained dominant for the second half of the match restricting Worth to 86-4 from their 20 overs. Wickets were shared around, including good catches from Eva B and Amelie T.

Our U15A boys also travelled away to Worth. Confidence was high following last week’s fantastic win. Steady progress from opening bowlers Max S and Rafe C gave Lancing a positive start. James C’s bowling took important wickets to slow the opposition. 179 to win for Lancing. Openers Harry Z and Charlie G started well with plenty of positive shots. Wickets steadily fell throughout the innings in what was a valiant effort from the Lancing boys, who fell 50 runs short in the chase. James C was awarded MVP for his excellent bowling and brilliant cameo with the bat.

There was another impressive win for our U14A boys. A tight bowling display that saw Lancing restrict a strong Worth to 134. The pairing of Alex McG and Alex G added 100 for the second wicket. Scores finished Worth 134 to Lancing 135 for 2; Alex McG 57 not out and Alex G 37. A great win by 8 wickets.

The Lancing 1st XI had a difficult start to their innings, losing 4 early wickets, but an excellent middle order partnership by Max W (42) and Oscar E (42 not out) saw Lancing finish on 128 for 7. Worth had a strong start to their innings which gave them a good platform to finish the game in the final over and win by just 2 wickets; a narrow loss for our first XI.

On to tennis ...
A very successful afternoon last Saturday for the Lancing College Tennis Club. The Senior Boys' tennis team played host to Seaford College in both doubles and singles matches. Strong performances by Upper Sixth and Fifth Form leavers Ollie M and John-Philipp L saw the boys finish on a comfortable 7-2 win in their last competitive fixture for the school, with overall MVPs being awarded to Ralph H and Will P for their individual performances and their combined efforts as a doubles pair.

The Junior and Senior girls team also walked away with a convincing 10-4 win over Seaford, a fitting end for Sixth Formers Issy H, Bea J and Antonia K who all leave at the end of this term.

Team of the week however is awarded to the U15A boys who continue their excellent performance on court, defeating Seaford 16-2 and who finish the season undefeated. Special mention to Austin J, Loui G and Rory H who have consistently played and won all eight of their competitive fixtures this term and whose commitment to sport this year, and in particular tennis, has been integral to the success of the U15A boys’ team.
