Sporting Highlights - 28 May 2021

It was the finals day for the Diamond League Athletics last Saturday and proved to be another exciting event, with over 30 students travelling up to K2 Crawley. Each performer had accrued points over the last three meetings and a medal was awarded to the top three in each event.

Our first medal of the day – which was GOLD – went to Alice S for the Senior Girls' 200m; Louis J-Q was awarded SILVER for Senior Boys' High Jump; Flynn Sinclair gained BRONZE on the Junior Boys' High Jump; and Kate B also was awarded BRONZE for Senior Girls' High Jump.

On the track we congratulate Nana O
-N who won the Inter Boys' 100m race in a recorded time of 11.42 ... but several stopwatches at the end of the track from Lancing staff proved that he actually ran it in an outstanding 10.87. Joe F came in second in the 1500m but only got the BRONZE medal overall.

A final mention must go to Max W who came along because his cricket game was cancelled. He came second in the 1500m Junior Boys' Race ... and after Tuesday’s achievement on the 5-miler, we think Max has a very bright future in long distance running!

Girls Football
Our Senior and Junior girls' football teams travelled to Ardingly on Saturday to play in their annual 6s tournament.
The seniors had a fantastic day making improvements with each game. They lost their first game to Ardingly but then drew their next two.

Our Third Form girls displayed great enthusiasm although they had an unlucky draw against some strong Ardingly teams. They worked well throughout the day, with great encouragement for each other.
Overall, it was a fun and enjoyable afternoon, and all the girls should be very proud of themselves.

Tennis
The U15 boys’ tennis team were in action on Tuesday against Cardinal Newman in the Year 9 & 10 LTA Youth Schools League.

The 15A boys continued their winning streak achieving another solid 12-0 win, and the 15Bs – although taking a tough 6-0 loss to begin with – came back fighting with wins from Will P and Eddie I in the singles, and Artem O and Jago R in the doubles. Now tied at 6-6, the boys faced the dreaded 10-point shootout, where Will and Jago took to the court for the deciding match. Smart serving, combined with solid rallying from the back and efficient play at the net led to the boys making a cracking start to the tiebreak, eventually winning 10-6 and gaining the overall 7-6 win for Lancing.

Cricket
The 1st XI cricket team played Hampshire on Tuesday in an exciting T20 encounter. Lancing was put into bat and the openers Ozzy R and Jamie C hit a score of 92 after 11 overs. Special mention must go to these two batsmen as their smart and quick running between the wickets got Ozzy his 50 and Jamie a strong 35. Lancing finished the innings on 140.

Lancing’s bowling innings got off to a great start, with top bowling from George H-H and Oscar S dismissing their early batsmen. Fine bowling from Thomas B, Rocco G and four wickets from MOTM Ozzy R led Lancing to a comfortable victory by 30 runs, with Ozzy getting a hat-trick to dismiss the last three batsmen.
