Sporting Highlights - 29 April 2022

We start by congratulating our Equestrian Team of Ralf B, Pippa S and Islay L who competed in the Eventers' Challenge at Golden Cross earlier this month. They won the competition with three clear rounds and have qualified for Hickstead on 28 May. This is a fantastic achievement, and we wish them luck!

Huge congratulations to Freddie B and his Gymnastics Team who travelled to Sheffield in the Easter holidays to compete at the British Gymnastics Championships. Freddie’s team won silver in their category which is a fantastic achievement.

The Tennis Club has had a terrific start to the summer term, starting with the U18 boys, U18 girls and U16 boys all in action last Saturday competing in the annual Sussex League Tournament.

The U16 boys, captained by Austin J, travelled to Ardingly. The boys fought hard and finished in a respectable fourth place overall.

The Senior girls' team which consisted of Izzy H, Dottie C, Kitty P, Coco M and Amelia P got off to a solid start in their U18 event, beating Hurst and Ardingly comfortably to secure their place in the final against a strong Eastbourne College. Despite Issy H winning her singles against the #1 seed, it wasn’t to be for the girls, with the team losing out 5-1 in the final.

Having finished in second place last year, the U18 boys were determined to get the win this year. Solid wins in the early stages of the tournament against Seaford College, Brighton College and Hurst allowed the boys to progress through to the final to face Bede’s. A sensational team effort from all saw the boys take the overall win 4-2.

On Tuesday the Boys' 1st team played their second round National Cup match against a competitive Eastbourne side. Fighting for every single point, this was one of the closest fixtures both Eastbourne and Lancing had seen in years. In a total of 4 ½ hours, the sensational efforts from George N, Jayden H, George H and Henry H eventually paid off with the boys taking the overall win 8-4. They now face Bede’s in semi-final of the national Glanville Cup.

On Wednesday the Junior girls were in action in their first LTA Year 9&10 Youth School match against Burgess Hill. A young squad made up of Verity K, Hattie P, Amelia P and Coco M, walked away victorious with a confident 8-2 win. They still face Bede’s and Hurst in the remainder of their box with the team who finishes top of the league progressing through to knockouts.

The cricketers played against Hampshire's Development squads last Saturday which was a brilliant home spectacle and lovely to see so much support from parents and students.
It was a steady start to the season for the 1st XI with Hampshire scoring 299 for 7. Thomas B, taking 3 for 55, and Hamish K with 2 for 31, were the pick of the bowlers. In reply Lancing mustered 187 all out with Ozzie R at 60 and Cosmo P chipping in with 20 at the end.

The U15A team had a close fought game, with Lancing restricting Hampshire to 177 all out and Fin S taking 4 wickets. A valiant run chase led by Oscar E (who scored a brilliant 77) still sadly left us 20 runs short of the target.

In the U14A team match Hampshire scored 225 for 4 in their 35 overs, with the Lancing bowlers (especially LPW's Joseph C – pick of the bowlers) and fielders sticking to their task well. Lancing in reply bowled out for 135 with Alex McG (LPH) top-scoring.
