Sporting Highlights - 7 June 2019

Athletics
House Athletics proved to be a fantastic way start to our Founder's Day celebrations with 130 athletes competing for their Houses. Very rarely do we get to celebrate the whole school community in a competitive but relaxed and fun environment; this event really showed how unique we are. The highlight of the day was seeing Cyril L 'shush' the crowd as he cleared his Personal Best (1.75m) in the high jump. A feat that Miss Andrew states could be taller than his Housemaster! It was also excellent to see Saints' House competing in their own right. Thanks must go to all of the staff who helped out to ensure that the afternoon ran so smoothly.

The results – with trophies awarded to the winning Houses – were as follows:

Junior Girls
Third place: Handford
Second place: Field's
First place: Manor

Senior Girls
Third place: Field's
Second place: Manor
First place: Sankey's

Junior Boys
Third place: School
Second place: Head's
First place: Teme

Senior Boys

Third place: Gibbs'
Second place: Head's
First place: School

Cricket
Founder's Day saw success for the U14A Cricket team, who beat the Prep Schools' Academy by 7 wickets.
A fine half century from Rocco G set the team up well and was ably supported with 30 from Ethan F.

Rocco added to this on Tuesday with a knock of 47 in a narrow defeat in the County Cup quarterfinal against Cardinal Newman. Star of the show was Thomas B who scored a fine 60 from only 30 deliveries.

Tennis
In another Founder's Day sports event, the Boys' and Girls' Tennis 1st Team took on the OLs on the grass courts. With 14 pairs in action, 45 sets played and over 200+ games won – all in the space of four hours – it was a jam packed afternoon of tennis. However there could only be one winner: the question was would it be the current students or the OLs ...?

The College team took home a total of 92 games but, sadly, this was not enough to beat the famous OLs who won an incredible 136 games.
Well done to all who took part on the day. Same time next year for the rematch?!

Lastly, Founder's Day also saw the return of the Junior Manor Cup, with excellent play by all and the bar raised in terms of fancy dress.

This is the only competition where you will find Mario and Luigi playing tennis against a giant ice cream cone, a princess, a caveman and cavewomen! Fancy dress aside, the afternoon was jam packed full of lots of fun and great tennis. The Final saw Bea J & Dan T take on Rosie H & Isaac P. Some excellent shots were played by both pairs; however great serving by Dan combined with flawless volleys at the net from Bea resulted in victory for the pair.
