Sporting Highlights - end of Advent Term 2020

As we begin the holidays, Miss Andrew would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in games this term.

In September it was difficult to envisage how sport would run at the College but if you look back at what we have achieved and how much sport has actually taken place, you cannot help but feel proud of our sporting community.

Most sports have been able to continue except for climbing, shooting and squash. It has not always been easy coaching in year group bubbles, but our staff and coaches have worked hard to ensure that every one of you has had the opportunity to grow and develop in your sport.

The lack of Inter-School Fixtures, although frustrating, has allowed us to build on the sporting community on a Saturday. The Inter-House events, hockey and tennis tournaments, cross-country and the Covid Football Cup have been massively successful and achieved their sole aim of encouraging mass participation. On a Saturday it has not been unusual to have 300+ people out on the games field, whether it is through participating, spectating or coaching.

To recap briefly…

In the run up to Half Term our cricket players were out in force and were able to gain some exposure to Inter-House 6-a-side matches. This opportunity was a good way for the players to gain some match experience but also for the coaches to identify any new talent.

To remind you, Mr Maru’s champagne moment was Ozzy R’s throw from deep in the boundary to run out Barney H.

Tennis also proved extremely popular in the first few months of term and every court was taken up by both squad and recreational tennis players playing throughout the week. The club hosted Inter-House competitions before Half Term and The Manor Cup after Half Term which – to remind you – is a mixed doubles tournament. Every one of these competitions has been hugely popular and the standard of tennis at Lancing is extremely high.

Our swimmers have enjoyed being back in the pool and have trained very hard. It is difficult to keep motivated without competition so Lancing College Swimmers took part in the first ever VIRTUAL gala against Ardingly, Bede's and Eastbourne.
The second round of the Virtual Sussex League was planned for 1 December but, due to the second lockdown, was postponed till the New Year where we will can get our revenge!

Target Rifle Shooting: As a result of his qualification shoot, Thomas C-F was selected for the U21 GB smallbore team for the Drew match, in both the main team and also the top-3 men’s team.
These competitions took place over Half-Term (in less then ideal weather conditions), and we are pleased to report that the two U21 GB teams Thomas was selected for in the Drew match won, beating New Zealand and USA.

The Football Club has brought the revolutionary Covid Cup’ to Lancing, competed for by 'No Cap Utd’ and ‘Say Nada FC’;

Approximately 200 players took part each week and although Mr Mole has been instrumental in the organisation of the whole tournament, it was ultimately designed and run by the students for the students. The Common Room has also supported this competition and Mr Mole has managed to persuade several staff to manage and coach each team. Thank you to all those staff members and coaches who have been involved: the boys really have appreciated your support and time.

Mr Mole writes:
'Two clubs, 10 teams, 20 fixtures, 192 players stepped on to the park to support their clubs, some to scores goals, some to save goals, ALL to achieve their club points by participation. With five points for each player who took the park week in addition to the goals, assists and win bonuses, there were some 4500 points amassed - 2680 of those from participation alone!

Only 66 points separated the two clubs after four rounds and five weeks of action, including the transfer window. Well done to No Cap Utd who came up on top with 2286 point. Well done to everyone involved!'

The girls have missed playing competitive hockey but have trained hard and enjoyed their inter year group 6-a-side matches before Half Term and the 11-a-side Inter Year group matches after Half Term. The girls benefited from the masterclass coaching session from Czech International hockey player Bara Kavanova as well as Brighton and Hove Men’s First Team Captain, Luke Owen.

The last Saturday of term epitomised the hard work and dedication of our hockey players as over 70 girls braved the cold and wet weather to play their final matches. The teams of the day were Upper Sixth, Lower Sixth and the Fifth Form, who demonstrated how far they have come showing an excellent display of hockey. A special mention must go to Hannah G, Amelia P, Issy G, Poppy S, Grace B and Rosie H for their superb performances.

Finally, just prior to Half Term we ran the junior girls Inter-House Cross-Country which was a roaring success with 70 girls tackling the League Run course. The running club has thrived this term and Mr Brookes has been delighted with the standard of our runners.  We hope to “run” the League Run Competition next term and also the famous 3- and 5-mile races in March, so keep training!
