Sporting Highlights - End of Summer Term 2018

At the end of another action-packed and glittering sporting year, we thank all the pupils and staff for their tireless commitment to the department. We have 21 competitive sports at Lancing, and we have participated in 665 fixtures; an epic year of sporting participation.

Athletics
This term was the inaugural season of the Sussex Independent Schools Diamond League (SISDL). This event has given many athletes the chance to show off their talents, and Lancing has produced two if its own stars! Bupi M set two SISDL records in the 100m with a time of 12.59s. Bupi then went on to set a games record in the long jump with a jump of 4.75m. Cyril L broke his own personal best in the high jump, flying to the height of 1.65m. And finally, the event has raised the profile of this sport, and given many their first taste of competition. We hope of that these stars, and many more Lancing pupils will carrying on next year and add to the impressive achievements of 2018. We give special thanks to Emma Jaymes who has staffed this sport so well, and also to Miss Macready for her outstanding specialist knowledge.

Half Colours are awarded to: Cyril L and Bupi M.

Cricket
It has been a long summer of Cricket for all the teams. Mr Maru writes that good progress was made with a strong second half of the term in particular. Batting highlights were two centurions in George D-B and Barney H. In the bowling department, Ollie J and Max B recorded 5 wicket hauls, with Ollie taking a hat-trick against Whitgift. The junior teams progressed in the county competitions with the U15A team making the county finals day. The 1st XI reached the Langdale cup semi-finals and saved one of its best performances to the penultimate game of the season, beating The Sussex Martletts by 4 wickets. Jacob C scored 40 and Seb L hit a 6 off the last ball to win the game.

However, the most ‘important’ match of the season gave bragging rights to the leavers. Mr Mole writes: “The students amassed 158 in their 20 overs with Ollie J falling just 4 runs short of his 50. Graduate Gap Assistant Billy Murray was the pick of the staff bowlers with 3 crucial wickets. The staff then mounted a robust response, looking to be in control, but fell short in the final over only a handful of runs short. Congratulations to the students for recording their first ever victory in this fixture."

Eight players this year have qualified for Wisden, and the highlight of the season was Alice C aged 13 making her 1st XI debut against Tiffin school and taking a wicket with her first ball. Mr Maru congratulates all players and staff, as well as thanking them for their considerable efforts on long, hot Saturday afternoons.

The junior house champion was Second's.

Half colours are awarded to: Elian C, Max D, Lewis F, Matthew L and Seb L.

Full Colours are awarded to: Harry C, Will E and Ollie J.

Target Rifle Shooting
Target rifle shooting is again going from strength to strength and the since the last residential camp at Easter the team have again competed at Bisley amongst other South of England schools.

The team’s next venture will be in two weeks where thirteen of our finest cadets will be heading out to Bisley again to represent the College in four back to back days of competitive shooting against fifty schools from across the UK, Australia and South Africa. We wish them good fortune and good weather!

In addition to Full Colours already awarded to Russell W, Full colours are presented to Sophie C and half colours to Tim C.

Tennis
This term was very successful for tennis at Lancing. The boys 1st team, made up of Alfie F, Joe R, Will B and Joe H won the Sussex Plate. The junior boys of William T, George N, William C and Finlay R performed above expectations at the U15 Sussex Shield to clinch a runners-up spot. However the real stars of Lancing Tennis are the U15 girls team, with Tiana F, Alicia H, Talia W, Ruby B, Olesia G and Natalia Y all contributing to winning their AEGON league and successfully qualifying Lancing as Sussex Champions to the regional knockouts.

The stars have been the U15 girls. Recently voted as the college ‘team of the year’ Tiana, Alicia, Natalia and Olesia where crowned Sussex Shield champions at a recent tournament where they dominant from start to finish. Well done to all involved in tennis over this past term. The team topped its group by beating Bede's A 17-16, Christ's Hospital 28-4 and Eastbourne B 25-10. In the quarter finals they faced Rikkyo. A dominant performance by all four girls saw the girls win 26-8. In the semi-finals they faced Eastbourne and the girls continued to impress by winning 23-9. In the final the girls faced a very strong Seaford Head side which included two county players, but the pair of Olesia and Natalia held their own to draw 9-9. Alicia & Tiana played some outstanding tennis against very strong opposition with Tiana showing why she is ‘the real deal’. A 20-14 overall win followed, clinching the first county title for many years. A very well done to the girls for winning the Sussex Shield, and being county champions.

In the recent House competitions, the Junior Girls' winner was Handford House with 6 wins out of a possible 9. It should be noted that here, Natalia Y & Talia W did not drop a game.

The Senior Girls' Champion House was Sankey's, with 7 out of 9 wins. A solid 1st pairing of Mabel W and Olivia L were undefeated throughout.

In the Junior Boys' tournament, Second's House claimed top spot. George N and Nikita P, as well as Felix U and Thor R were the unbeaten pairings.

The Senior Boys' tournament went down to the last set of matches, and was won by School House. The pairings won all six games with Will B and Joe H leading at the helm. Special mention must go to the tennis debutants (Gray B, and Kadir C) from Gibbs', along with Sam B and Russell W from Head's. The College still may be able to make tennis players out of you yet!
