Sporting Highlights - End of Summer Term 2019

It’s been another action-packed term of sport, with many outstanding performances and achievements that we have heard about in the weekly roundup presented in assembly. We are as ever indebted to our hard working staff and coaches as well as to the pupils and parents for making this another excellent term.

Cricket
The highlight for the Cricket Club has been the county quarter final reached by the U15a team as well as the continued high performance on the England pathway for Alice C. The 1st XI has had a youthful look and its highlight was the 5-wicket win over KES Southampton. The addition of Girls' Cricket has brought enthusiasm and positivity to the pitches of Lancing (as well as quite a lot of energetic noise!) The girls have been totally committed to training and matches, with the 1st team having won 50% of its matches.

Half colours are awarded to: Jade B, Prin Ci, David C, Ollie D, Jeffrey K-D, Barney J-D, Florence L, John McC, Julia R and Daryna T.

Full Colours are awarded to:  Molly C-H, Matthew L, Bella M, Ella P and Lewis F

Target Rifle Shooting
Twelve of our rifle shooting team are heading to Bisley for four days of competitions during July. We wish them every success under Tim C’s captaincy. A little later in the holidays Thomas C-F will be shooting for the GB cadet rifle team in Jersey where again we wish him good shooting amongst some of the country’s top marksmen.

Half colours are awarded to: Jon L, Christopher L and Daryna T. We also make a special award of half colours to a Fifth Form pupil.

Normally colours are reserved for the Sixth Form years, but the achievements of one particular young man deserve special recognition. Thomas C-F has been representing the county at adult level even though he is in the Fifth Form. He has also been selected for the GB U17 touring team. Thomas is also awarded his half colours.

Full Colours are awarded to: Tim Clifford

Athletics
In the second year of Diamond League Competition we have heard about the impressive haul of medals and titles that the Lancing pupils have won. In addition to this, we saw the welcome return of the House track and field competition to the calendar which saw good numbers turn out to represent their respective houses.

Half Colours are awarded to: Megan J and Favour N and are re-awarded to: Bupi M

Full Colours are awarded to: Cyril L

We also award the Athletes of the year medals to Bupi M and Cyril L.

Swimming
School swimmers Archie N, James R, Grace S and George C swam very well for Lancing in the ESSA gala last weekend winning eight gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals between them. Special mention goes to James R who also broke the 200m Individual Medley County Record. Archie N showed great form with personal best times in all his races and Grace S improved her 400m freestyle by over 12 seconds and won medals in all her eight races.

Over the last few months George C has secured entry in four events at the forthcoming British Championships in Glasgow and another four events at the Swim England Nationals in Sheffield. James R also qualified in the 200m Individual Medley at the Swim England Nationals. This is no mean feat as a very high ranking is needed even for qualification.

Awarding of senior colours is reserved for the end of the Advent Term; in the meantime, James has been presented with his County Record certificate.

Tennis
In short, the results of the Tennis Club have been the best of all the sports this year at Lancing. The club as a whole has won a whopping 62% of its fixtures, with both the 1st teams, the Boys' U15A and Girls' U15A all having won over 75% of their respective battles. The most successful team in the Club was the Boys' U15As having won all of their matches as well as the Sussex Shield and progressing to the knockout rounds of the National Cup.

In House Tennis the Junior champion Houses were Manor and Second's. In the Senior competition, Manor won the girls' event and Heads' won the boys'.

Manor Cup: In glorious sunshine the Manor Cup took place on the grass courts. The best dressed pair was Fred V B and Mandy W for their Banana outfits, closely followed by Ollie C and Emily S in their Hawaiian attire. Runners up in the main competition were Charlie W and Talia W; the winners were Kyron S and Flora D.

We would now also like to mark the achievements of one of our leaving Fifth Form tennis players. Tiana F has been an outstanding servant to the College, combining County, National and International representation with playing for the school first team. She has been an excellent ambassador for Lancing Tennis and not only receives her half colours, but also the award for Sporting Excellence. This isn’t given out every year, but in Tiana’s case is given to her as she has represented the College way above and beyond the school teams.

Half colours are awarded to: Flora D, Yana M, Angus N, Jason P, Emily S, Kyron S, Georgia T and Freddie V B

Full Colours are awarded to: Alfie F
