Sporting Highlights – Friday 17 May 2024

Well done to Hadley F who achieved Silver in the Track and Field Championships in shot putt and 4 x 100m relay at the weekend.

Congratulations to the U14A boys and girls who both came runners up in the annual Sussex Cup doubles tennis tournament at Bede’s yesterday afternoon.

Girls Football
On Saturday, our Junior and Senior Girls' football teams faced off against Christ's Hospital. Ava U scored the only goal of the game for the Juniors who went down to a disappointing defeat; however, Lily T scored a late winner for the Seniors to give them a 2-1 victory. Some excellent performances throughout the team, which included several debutants including Lila D, Evie M and Sophia B all playing up from the junior teams and competing extremely well.

Tennis
On Saturday the Tennis Club was in full action with 11 teams competing at home, at Christ’s Hospital and at Bede’s. Lancing secured a clean sweep of wins in the block fixture against Christ’s Hospital with the Senior boys winning 14 matches out of a possible 18, and the Senior girls following suit with 13 wins to Christ's Hospital's 5. 

Senior MVPs are awarded to Sarah A and Mimi W for their teamwork and resilience demonstrated throughout the afternoon and to Loui G and Rory H for their performance in the closing tie break battle for the 2nd team boys. Special thanks also go to Third Former Gianmarco S for stepping in last minute after his 14A match and playing in his first Senior boys' fixture, winning two out of three with partner Kiril B. 

The Junior boys and girls improved upon their previous performances, with the 15A and B boys both securing impressive 6-0, 6-0 wins, and the U15 and 14 girls taking equally impressive 7-2, 9-0 wins over their counterparts. Great sportsmanship was noted by all teams throughout the afternoon, and with the sun finally making a much needed appearance, Saturday proved to be a success all round.

The U15 boys and girls travelled to Seaford on Monday and hosted Steyning Grammar on Tuesday as part of their campaign to maintain first place in the LTA Yr 9 & 10 league tournament. A full set of individual results can be found online but after the first three rounds we are pleased to confirm that both girls and boys division 1 teams now progress through to the knockout stages of the tournament, as do the boys' Division 2 team, with the girls' Division 2 team finishing in close second to Seaford College.


Athletics
A successful afternoon last Thursday at Hurst at the Athletics Diamond League meet, with Theo S-F coming 1st in 800m and 1500m, Joshua O 1st in the 100m and Pranav A who cleared 175cm in the high jump.

We wish all the Junior and Seniors competing at the final Diamond Athletics meet tomorrow at Withdean.


Cricket
1st XI v Tiffin School 
An excellent performance in the field saw Lancing bowl Tiffin out for 153.2 wickets each for Max W, Alex McG, and on debut George H. But the star performer on debut was William P with 4 wickets for 33 runs and was on a hat-trick in his first over. A good start with the bat laid a solid foundation for the middle order to come in and knock of the runs in fine style.

A 47 run third wicket partnership of 47 runs between Tom H & Alex McG and when Alex departed in came the star of the day George H-H. He and Tom H put on a quick 74 run partnership in which George scored 43 (not out) runs of 20 balls and Tom H finished on 74 (not out) to see Lancing win by 6 wickets and 2.5 overs to spare.

2nd XI
The 2nd XI had a close encounter with Tiffin School at the weekend. Led by Teddy B well-constructed 47, the team reached a respectable 125 in their 25 overs. Unfortunately, missed chances cost Lancing, and Tiffin managed to reach the total with 2 overs to spare. MVP Teddy B.

15A
Skipper Sam W won the toss and elected to bat first on hot Saturday afternoon. Early wickets fell and the Lancing side struggled to recover. All out for 62 runs with Sam W top scoring with 16. 

Tiffin's opening batters showed composure as they managed to chase down the total without losing a wicket.

14A
Lancing batted first and were bowled out for 97 with Thomas R carrying his bat for a gritty and skilful 50. Tiffin scored the runs necessary for their victory, but Lancing made them work every step of the way with some tight fielding. Some real positives from the performance.

14B/15B mixed team 
Tiffin School scored 168 for 6 off 25 overs. In reply Lancing were bowled out for a disappointing 57 with Tom S top scoring with 14.
An excellent bowling performance from Tiffin saw Lancing finally dismissed for 57.

U15A v Eastbourne College Blackshaw bowl 
Lancing's bowlers put in an impressive performance bowling first, with Gethin W, Sam W, Joe C, and Alex McG combined their efforts to restrict Eastbourne to a total of 152-5 off their 100 balls. Lancing's chase began on a strong note, with Alex G and Alex McG showcased some extravagant shots, each scoring 52 runs. Their partnership kept Lancing in the game and provided a solid foundation for the innings. However, despite their valiant efforts, Lancing fell just 17 runs short, finishing on 135-1.  A great effort from the team, with several positives to take forward into their next match.

Tuesday 1st XI Langdale Cup v Christ's Hospital
On a rain-affected wicket Lancing lost the toss and were asked to bat. Batters struggled to time the ball on a two-paced wicket but managed to post a respectable total of 103 of 100 balls. Christ's Hospital were made to work hard for their runs, the fielding was outstanding, and Christ's Hospital just got over the line with 2 balls to spare and by 1 wicket.

Tuesday U14 Girls v Roedean 
Lancing started strongly in the field with tight bowling and energy in the field with the standout performance being Bibi W who took 2 wickets and a runout which helped restrict Roedean to 48. In reply Lancing keep the scoring ticking over with lots of running between the wickets. The MVP batter was Lily S who finished as the team's top scorer and helped Lancing end on 68 and getting the win.

Tuesday U15 v Blatchington Mill County U15 Cup
In a thrilling County T20 cup match at home against Blatchington Mill. Bowling first Lancing restricted Blatchington Mill to just 92-9 in their allotted 20 overs. Wickets were shared around the team, with Joe C leading the charge with 3 wickets. Gethin W and Sam W supported brilliantly, each claiming 2 wickets. Lancing then executed a steady and composed chase, with Alex G, who made a well-crafted 42, and Joe J who contributed a solid 21. Their efforts ensured that Lancing comfortably chased down the target. 

The MVPs for the match were Alex G and Joe J for their crucial contributions with the bat.
