Well done to 2016 leaver Will Fazakerley OL on his first professional century for Leicestershire County Cricket Club. Will was also called up for his 1st Team debut in this weekend’s championship match against…..Sussex.
Against KES Southampton, an opening performance with the bat from Barney J-D left us dumbfounded (0). Sterling performances from the lower order ensured Jeffery K-D scored enough runs to put a joyful grin on his face. An excellent 86 run eighth wicket stand between John McC and Ollie C saw the team reach a competitive 146. Ollie top scored with 42 not out. After the tea break we had more stunning performances from Barney J-D and Rex W. Ollie D took the last catch of the game to secure back-to-back victories for the U15A team.
Next the College took on Whitgift School – the first time in recent history that the Croydon School has made the journey south. The 1st XI recorded an emphatic win by a margin of 96 runs. On a damp and tricky wicket Ollie J made 25, and Luke H top scored with 29. The 120 that the team made seemed to be a few short, but who could predict what was to happen next? Matt L and Alex S ripped through the opposing order taking the first 7 wickets between them. This left Harry C and Will E to tie up the match. Whitgift last only 9 overs and were dismissed for 24.
Last month also saw the final of the House Cricket competition. A keenly fought affair saw Second's beat Gibbs'. A feature of the game was the accurate bowling of the Second's team, clean-bowling all bar one of the Gibbs' side.
Last week the U14 team took on Brighton College and we had a fantastic result in what was the team's first outing. Abby H showed great agility in the field and this gave the team an excellent base from which they scored 17 times. The final score was 17–5 to Lancing.
We also report on the recent success of Jasmine H. Over Half Term, Jasmine received her sixth England cap and her second of 2017. She has been selected to represent England in the World Junior Championships (individuals and team) in New Zealand in the Summer. Outstanding, well done Jasmine!
Congratulations to Tiana F, who became the National Tennis Champion at U14 level last week. In the Grade 2 competition, Tiana won five matches and also came back from a set down in the final. She also won the Doubles tournament in the same week, this time without dropping a set.
The U14 girls’ team played against Christ's Hospital. The girls started off strong playing consistently and out-rallying their oppositions. A positive attitude and some incredible shots gave Lancing a 5-4 win. The U15A girls’ team also beat Christ's Hospital 9–0. The girls played exceptionally well and special mention goes to Flora D and Georgia T, who remained undefeated, winning all matches 6–0.
Following their recent success against Christ’s Hospital in the quarter finals of the Aberdare Cup, the 1st Team was confident. The first pair of Olivia L and Millie J won every match 6–2, while the second pair of Laura S and Viktoria D brought home winning scores of 6–0, 6–1, 6–1.
In the Boys’ matches against Hurst College, the U15A AEGON team – consisting of Sam N, Eddie J, Angus N and Kyron S – won with a score of 12–0. Both the U15B and U14A teams also won, 8–1 and 7–2 respectively. At home, the Senior Boys’ 2nd team also took on Hurst and after an epic, long first doubles match featuring Joe R and Archie D, the boys eventually won 3–1.
The Senior Boys' squad also played Portsmouth Grammar School winning 7–2. The team consisted of Michael S, Sam N, Joe R, Connor S-W, Guy B and Will B.
A team formed by Miss Macready, Pat Martyn-Smith, Mrs Mann, Izzy Pope and Ms Edwards completed the Arundel Sprint Triathlon. In the glorious sunshine they swam 400 metres in the Lido, cycled 20km and finished with a 5km run. It was a fantastic achievement by all and special congratulations to Miss Macready who finished first in her first ever triathlon!
Last month, two Lancing students were put in for their black belt grading. Diana M and Tai-Wan K took a 2-hour test in Japanese karate language and techniques. Diana and Tai-Wan have trained for over four years to take this exam and we are pleased to say that both students achieved a full pass. They are the first Lancing students to take, pass and now hold their black belts.
A week ago, Third Form golfer Charlie G travelled to Tunbridge Wells to compete in the Nevill Junior Open. He played well to shoot 79 to win the tournament. This victory lifted Charlie to fifth in the Sussex Order of Merit. To add to this success, LPH pupil Thady W finished seventh in the US Kids’ European Championships at Gullane Golf Club in Scotland. A truly outstanding effort. We wish him all the best in the upcoming IAPS Championships in Liverpool.

You may recall Jacob P and Russell W being selected for the England Schools’ smallbore teams at the end of last term. The scores are now in and it has been confirmed that both England teams won their matches and as an individual achievement Jacob placed 14th for England. Only one student in Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Channel Islands was able to beat his score of 194 out of 200.
At Easter, seven of the team stayed at Bisley for a residential weekend honing their marksmanship and teamwork skills. Jacob P won the main competition to claim the Easter prize. The team also competed against the OLs, where Russell W gained the top scores at combined distances of 300 and 500 yards.
The year will culminate in mid-July where the team will compete for silverware amongst the top schools in the country. Until that point there have been several warm-up matches. First we entered the Surrey Schools' Championship, and although the main team had a few setup issues knocking them back down the overall ranking, our youngest firers Seb L and Thomas C-F won the Under 16 pairs event with a score of 121 and seven v-bulls – knocking the Wellington A, B and C pairs back by at least two points and RGS Guildford’s A and B pair back by over five points. An excellent achievement.
There was a great deal to enjoy and watch on the 26th with the Cricketing highlight being the 65 run victory of the 1st XI over the Lancing Rovers OL team. Ollie J and Larry M put on 115 for the first wicket before Ollie fell for 62. Larry went on to make 55 as the team reached 210. With the ball, Matt L took 4 for 33 and Will E chipped in with two wickets as the XI ran out comfortable winners. The game should also be remembered for Alex S being presented with the Lancing Rovers Cup for dedication to College Cricket.
On the tennis courts, Tiana F and Leyton S won the Junior Manor Cup. Runners up were Katie T and Kyron S. Best Pair went to Alicia H and Dylan B, and Best Dressed went to Georgia T and Ben D. The afternoon also featured hard work on the grass courts in matches against the lively OL teams. The Senior boys won 9-7 and the Senior girls won 3-2.
