Young OLs support Pupils in their University Choices

Fifteen young OLs came back to Lancing on 13 September to talk to over 100 Upper Sixth Form pupils about their university experiences. With the UCAS application deadlines next month, pupils were interested in seeking advice on their personal statements, key information on specific courses and how their A Level subjects may translate to these.

Ambassadors represented Warwick, Exeter, Nottingham, Bath, Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London, LSE, Oxford Brookes, Bristol, Royal Holloway, Sheffield and UCL. The enthusiastic OLs enjoyed sharing their tips for a fulfilling social life at university and current pupils were keen to find out about the different societies and sports that were on offer, as well as what the university town was like.

Ambassadors came with a wealth of information about their varied university courses: History, Law, Medicine, Criminology and Social Policy, Economics, Mathematics, Music, Civil Engineering, Children’s Nursing, Modern and Medieval Languages, International Relations and Business Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. Feedback from pupils demonstrates that they found the sessions helpful in understanding the benefits of individual universities, as well as encouraging them to carry out further research.

Following the sessions, our Ambassadors were joined by their former teachers, Housemasters and Housemistresses for a drink in Great School.

Diana Cree, Executive Director External Relations, said: 'The programme is in its third year and we are all delighted in how it has grown and become a firm fixture in the calendar. The impact and importance of being able to share genuine university experiences with our current Sixth Form is well established and the anecdotal feedback from the year group has been very positive. University Ambassadors are an integral part of our three-year "My Future Programme" which ensures that pupils are supported and guided as they take ownership of their career journeys.'

Lancing College prides itself on its extensive and practical support for pupils as they prepare to leave Lancing. This also ensures that former pupils stay in touch with each other and with the school over time.
