Dance

Dance is thriving at Lancing Prep Hove, and is open to girls and boys of all ages and abilities, with clubs, competitions, trips and many opportunities to perform.

Clubs
There are 3 clubs per week and taught by Ms Barber who has a background in Contemporary dance: Monday lunch: Year 8 Contemporary class; Thursday evening: Junior (Years 3-6) Dance; Friday lunch: Senior (Years 6-8) Dance.

Competitions

Now in its sixth year, our in-house dance competition ‘Strictly Dancing at Lancing’ is always a very bubbly, passionate and effervescent affair and watched by many pupils and supporters. The quality of the dancing is extremely high in both Senior and Junior categories. There are trophies and medals for the winners and runners-up in each category.

Trips

There is an annual trip to see a dance show, either live, for example, ‘Ballet Revolucion’ (a fantastic Cuban dance company) at Sadlers Wells, London and in December 2016, a group of 18 budding dancers went to see the live cinema screening of the Royal Ballet’s magical Nutcracker.

Performances
The pupils also have the opportunity to perform in school musicals. In 2017, our Junior dancers involved in the Years 3 & 4 production of Little Red Riding Hood. The dancers also perform at the School Fête, Performance Assembly, Year 8 Contemporary Arts evening and take part in the annual Children’s Parade in Brighton. In 2017, 35 of our dancers were invited to join in the ‘Celebration of Dance’ in the theatre of Lancing College. There were solos, duos, trios and group routines from all ages. It was a fabulous platform for all aspiring dancers in the Lancing community and much appreciated by both participants and spectators. It is the first time this joint collaboration has taken place and we look forward to future dance ventures.

Colours
Dance colours are awarded to those who reach the equivalent of Grade 4 upwards in any dance style, who are able to combine technical ability with a sense of performance and those who show commitment to dance by regular attendance of clubs, workshops and trips. There is a Junior and Senior Dance Prize awarded at Prizegiving which rewards excellence in dance throughout the year.

Dance beyond Lancing Prep Hove

Our talented pupils are encouraged to pursue their dance aspirations and two have been accepted for a special Junior Associate Insight day at the Royal Ballet School in London during the half term holiday.

Many of our pupils move on to Lancing College for the next stage in their education and continue their dance careers there.
