They completed the WBD quiz and enjoyed searching for ‘bookish’ clues that were hidden around the school.

In addition to celebrating authors and books this World Book Day, all our children also explored Britain’s proud oral story telling tradition – with the help of a wonderful story teller: Jamie Crawford, whose tales transfixed the children from Nursery & Pre-School to Year 8!. We are grateful to our wonderful librarian Sue Waton who recommended him to the school and to the LPWA who made his visit to the school possible and do so much to enrich our children’s school experiences.

Our youngest pupils in Nursery and Pre-school were totally immersed in his engaging and active delivery of the tale of Mr Waggle and Miss Wiggle – thumbs who live in a hand! Reception, Years 1 and 2, giggled along to the story of a tiny little ghost in a dark, dark house. The children in Years 3,4 5 heard tales of: a prince, a dragon, a carpet and a lemon! Our older pupils were treated to traditional Scottlish stories, inspired by the work of Duncan Williamson. They enjoyed the dark nature of the tales of ‘poor Jack with his severed head’ and ‘Red Angus, the hunter’.

Jamie ended all his stories today, with a final farewell of ‘golden apples.’ The first golden apple was for the ‘listeners,’ the audience who paid attention and joined in with gusto. The second golden apple was for the ‘storyteller,’ who shared the stories with such passion. The third golden apple was thrown over his shoulder to ‘those who came before:’ the story tellers of old, who passed their stories around the camp fire and helped them to make their way through the centuries…and into our school today.

Our school was transformed on World Book Day into a riot of colour, as our pupils arrived as characters from their favourite books.
