Lancing College Swimming Club: One year on…

It has been a whirlwind of a year at Lancing College Swimming Club. We knew we were on to something fantastic, but we didn’t quite anticipate how bringing a ‘new’ club into an established swimming arena would create so many waves. Luckily we endured, and are now very excited to report that our swimmers have exceeded our expectations in such a short time.

With thanks to our wonderfully supportive swimmers, parents and friends, Lancing College Swimming Club is Swim England affiliated. We have established an excellent training programme with results showing through in competitions, and pride ourselves on being able to work to the needs of each individual swimmer whilst maintaining a strong team environment.

Supporting our Club is the newly formed Lancing College Swim School, which caters for pre-school, children and adult lessons. With small class sizes and swimming-specific skills taught from the outset, we know this will build a solid foundation from which our Club can grow. Our Stroke Development squads are designed to bridge the gap between ‘learn to swim’ and competitive training to help swimmers learn to train, build stamina and competitive skill elements before moving into Lancing College Swimming Club Squads.

Here are a few highlights of Lancing College Swimming Club in the past 12 months:

  • Just over 30% of our eligible 13yrs and over boys swimmers made either British Championships or English National Championships in 2019
  • Two British Championship Finals
  • Five English Nationals Finals with three top 6 finishes
  • More than half of our 13yrs and over boys made the Automatic Regional Qualifying Times, with George C winning one silver, two bronze and other top 6 placings at Regionals. George has also been selected for the England Talent Swimming Programme
  • Our Senior Girls have competed at Regionals and Counties, narrowly missing out on Nationals this year
  • Grace B and Giulia V-A have been selected for the England Water Polo Talent Identification programme
  • Four Sussex County Age Group Open Water Champions
  • Grace S won the Junior Girls Pier to Pier race 2019
  • George C broke the Sussex County U14s 800m Freestyle record
  • James R broke the Sussex county U14s 200IM record
  • Four Lancing pupils and Club swimmers qualified for ESSA National relay finals in 2020
  • Stuart Woolliscroft broke the Sussex County Masters 25-29yrs 50m Backstroke record
  • Julie Bruton broke the Sussex County Masters 30-34yrs 50m Backstroke record
  • 1st and 2nd U14 boys points scorers were George C and James R.

Things to look forward to:

  • The National Arena Swimming League and full competition calendar under Lancing College as newly formed Club
  • The development of the Masters squad: with more training hours and a stronger team, we are very excited to see what the 2019-2020 has in store for our Masters and Triathletes
  • Lancing College ‘Mini Meet’ in December 2019: the Club has some simply outstanding swimmers that are still too young to compete and so we are hosting our own ‘mini meet’ competition in December to give those youngsters some experience in a race environment.

The 2019/2020 season is set to be even better, and we simply cannot wait!
