College Marshal
The Appointment
Lancing College is seeking to appoint a College Marshal. This role will be pupil-facing (managing the supervision of groups of pupils in the evening, patrolling the site including the Café) and the post-holder will play a vital role within the College’s security team.
We are seeking a highly reliable individual who has experience working with children and young people and who has a natural authority but is also warm and approachable.

Job Title: College Marshal
Reporting to: The Bursar and Senior Deputy Head
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Much of the role will involve working in a supervisory and guiding capacity with groups of children during non-lesson times (e.g. supervision of the Café and the Quads, being a roving presence around the grounds and be proactive in liaising with House duty staff.
- The College Marshal will work closely with the Security Manager and the Assistant Head (Pastoral) and will assist the Security Manager in ensuring the security of the site.
- The College Marshal will support the member of staff on evening Common Room (CR) Duty (who is present 8.30pm – 10.00pm) through shared supervision, patrolling and lock-up duties prior to the arrival of the overnight Security team. They will be responsible for patrolling the Chapel and locking areas after pupils have left in conjunction with the CR Duty member of staff. Specific responsibilities will be confirmed with the post-holder once appointed.
- The College Marshal will be responsible for the administration, running and supervision of Extra Duties, which take place on a Friday afternoon at 4.00pm – 5.00pm or 4.15pm – 5.15pm in the Lent term.
- During term time the College Marshal will assume some responsibility for the emergency security phone. This is likely to be every third week but to be finalised upon appointment.
- The College Marshal will make themselves available during their hours of work to assist with any reasonable request that does not adversely impact on other duties.
- The role is one which requires flexibility and the smooth and calm management of key areas in the school and willingness to work with a range of people in ensuring the safety and security of pupils and staff.
- The College Marshal will be called upon to help with the running of College events such as Open Day or Chapel weekend parking.

Essential
- Demonstrate strong communication skills when engaging with pupils, staff, and parents.
- Exercise natural authority while remaining warm, approachable, and supportive.
- Work effectively as part of a team and show initiative as an independent, self-motivated contributor.
- Remain calm, decisive, and consistently represent the College with professionalism.
- Manage time, tasks, and competing priorities efficiently and effectively.
- Maintain a level of physical fitness appropriate for a role requiring stamina and extensive movement across a large campus.
- Hold a valid driving license.
- Communicate confidently and clearly in speech, with competent written communication skills.
- Make sound judgements and respond appropriately to a wide range of situations.
- Possess strong IT skills, including familiarity with Word, Outlook, and Excel; training will be provided for all College systems.
Desirable
- Hold a current First Aid at Work qualification.
- Possess a valid, clean D1 licence; the ability to drive a minibus is desirable.
