Benjamin Irvine-Capel

Benjamin Irvine-Capel, OL

Gibbs’ 2018-2023, Undergraduate at Exeter University, Choral Scholar at Exeter Cathedral

Benjamin’s passion and talent for choral music set him on the path he continues to follow today. He was a Chorister of St Paul’s Cathedral in London, singing regularly for BBC radio and television -including occasions of national significance such as Her Late Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday, before joining Lancing College as a music scholar in Third Form. His commitment to his art, combined with his fascination with global politics and academic prowess, means he is going on to be a Choral Scholar of Exeter Cathedral while reading International Relations at Exeter University.

Benjamin sat for his portrait in the Chapel which came to mean a lot to him during his time at Lancing. He says, 'it is the place where I have loved making – and sharing in the making of – music as part of the College-wide worship which is such a vital and remarkable element of Lancing life.' Being appointed the roles of Prefect and Head of School meant that Benjamin made his own mark on the community. Benjamin 'found these roles immensely fulfilling and exciting, and it was a fascinating insight into the very hard work that goes into running the College – often hidden from the view of the pupils.' Some of his happiest memories of being at Lancing involved performing in Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols preceded by a beautifully simple plainsong Vespers.

Having lived away from his family since a young age, Benjamin values spending time with them at their home in Chichester. He also enjoys travel, has toured the USA and Europe as a Chorister, and treasures the time he spends with his friends who live abroad. Those that know him best know that he is at his happiest 'either when singing, boring people beyond measure with “fascinating” take-aways from yet another book on European politics, or at a gathering of family and friends.'
