Ethos and Aims

A STATEMENT OF THE ETHOS AND AIMS OF LANCING COLLEGE

Ethos

Lancing College is a Christian foundation in the Anglican tradition, set on one of the most remarkable sites in England, on the South Downs, beneath a Chapel that stands as a symbol of the College’s ambition and its enduring values.

Here, pupils are known personally, challenged intellectually, stretched creatively, and supported pastorally. We believe that education is not simply preparation for examinations, but formation: of character, of curiosity, of conscience. Our community draws together young people from across the United Kingdom and around the world, and that diversity of background, culture and experience is part of what makes a Lancing education distinctive and enriching for all.

Rooted in thankfulness, humility and service, we seek to send young people into the world with vision and integrity, equipped to discern their vocation in pursuing their ambitions and contributing, with generosity and purpose, to the lives of others.

Aims

  • To preserve and promote the Christian values at the heart of the College, fostering a safe, inclusive and supportive community in which every pupil feels valued and learns to place the needs of others alongside their own.
  • To nurture a genuine love of learning, inspire a desire for excellence, develop independent and searching minds that reach beyond the confines of the examination syllabus, and, in close partnership with parents, guide pupils through their childhood while preparing them to flourish both personally and professionally for life.
  • To offer an exceptional range of co-curricular experience across sport, music, drama, service and beyond — a space for self-discovery — sustained by a vibrant boarding ethos that enriches the lives of all pupils, day and boarding alike, ensuring that the years spent at Lancing are happy and fulfilling.
  • To be a force for good in society: widening access for those with the potential to benefit from a Lancing education and building partnerships that extend the College’s reach and reflect its values in the wider world.
