Canon Shimmyo

Canon Shimmyo, OL

Handford 2021-2023, Undergraduate at the Royal Veterinary College for Veterinary Medicine

After graduating from secondary school in Japan, Canon came to the UK in 2020 to study IGGSEs in Warminster before joining Lancing College Sixth Form in 2021. After just one year, Canon was made Prefect and then Head of School, which attests to the positive impact she had on the Lancing community in such a short space of time. Canon 'really appreciated the privilege given by these roles which allowed me to make the most of the time at the magical place by getting to know many interesting and inspirations people who I might not have encountered otherwise. Not to mention the 'secret cup of tea in the Heads of School meeting in the Head Master’s office on a Saturday morning'.

Canon describes Lancing as 'not only a school, but also a home'. She says that 'as someone who grew up in a small town in Japan, living in a place like Lancing which has such a rich diversity and enables natural interactions between people was a truly eye-opening experience'. During her time at Lancing, she felt 'supported and valued in the warm family' which helped her to get out of her comfort zone when she needed to.

Canon is beginning her studies of Veterinary Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College in September, having aspired to be a vet from a young age. During her time at Lancing she gained work experience at the College stables which soon became one of her favourite places – allowing her to connect with the animals, relax and reflect.

Canon is the embodiment of one of her core beliefs; respect. She believes that respect is 'especially important at places like Lancing where different cultures mix easily together. When we have respect for others and ourselves, we can grow and make real lifelong connections with those around us.'
