Sixth Formers Launch Into The 2024 Super Curriculum
This year’s cohort of Lower Sixth Form students is benefiting from a new Super Curriculum designed to ensure that they are not only prepared for their next steps academically, but also that they are confident in the skills required for the workplace and the wider world. This new curriculum sits alongside the well-regarded A Level/BTEC academic programme where students choose three or four subjects.
Cognitive skills are reported to be growing in importance most quickly, reflecting the increasing importance of complex problem-solving in the workplace. Surveyed businesses report creative thinking to be growing in importance slightly more rapidly than analytical thinking. Technology literacy is the third-fastest growing core skill.

Whether seeking work in the holidays, doing internships, or progressing straight into the world of work, employers are looking for candidates who can demonstrate more than the very best excellent exam grades. The Lancing Super Curriculum offers a wide range of opportunities for students to gain employer desired, transferable skills alongside the required PSHE curriculum which has a focus on preparing for independence, staying safe and career management skills.
Aspects of the new Super Curriculum
Termly chosen modules include data handling, coding and robotics, the environment, entrepreneurship and leadership skills. Each module is designed for a wide range of students from the absolute beginner to those with existing knowledge. Students will be encouraged to enhance their own independent learning, practical research skills and to understand broader contexts.
For students with interests in arts and culture, The Knowledge option gives students the opportunity to explore great works in the fields of the arts, design, literature, and music, delving more deeply into areas of interest and building individual cultural capital.
Two of the options enable students to attain a Level 2 BTEC in Leadership and Sports Leadership. Additionally, students are also able to choose to carry out an EPQ (equal to half an A Level), this is an independently developed and managed project chosen by the student. Both BTECs require a four-term commitment and are formally assessed.
Extension pathways to enable students to further their interests and explore possible careers in Medicine, Veterinary and Life Sciences, Law, Art, Architecture, Music and Drama.
Every student has a personal tutor with whom they meet weekly; the tutor plays a critical role in supporting and challenging students, encouraging them to follow their interests and build their repertoire of skills. Tutors are also vital in students’ university preparation.
