Sporting Highlights – Friday 12 June 2026
Tennis Report
Escaping the recent run of bad weather, Sunday provided the perfect setting for a fabulous day of tennis as members of the Fifth Form, Lower Sixth, and Upper Sixth took on the OLs. The OLs represented a wide range of leavers, spanning from as recently as 2024 back to 1996, creating a wonderful atmosphere of shared experience and connection.
The matches themselves were as much about community as they were about competition. There were siblings competing against one another, parents partnering with their sons, former 1st team captains meeting for the first time and joining forces, and new friendships forming seamlessly between current students and OLs. The fixture was played in excellent spirit throughout, with the current students emerging as overall winners by 3–2.
The highlight of the day came in a doubles match that epitomised the quality on display. Fifth Form students Ben A and Jacob T faced former 1st team captains Loui Shaw and George Naunton in a contest of outstanding level. The match showcased elite doubles play and was a fitting advertisement for tennis at Lancing, played on the grass courts – a surface many of the OLs were delighted to revisit.
On Tuesday, the weather once again held firm as the courts hosted Junior House Tennis. Despite some pre-tournament favourites, the competition proved incredibly tight, with numerous matches decided by the narrowest of margins.
In the Junior Boys’ event, history was made as the competition ended in a complete tie – level on overall matches won, individual rubbers, and even points scored. This unprecedented outcome meant a rematch was required between Teme and Second’s House. Teme entered the decider looking to retain their title, while a determined Second’s side battled through adversity, including injuries, footwear issues, and enforced substitutions. The drama continued right until the final match. With Teme winning the 1st pair and Second’s taking the 3rd pair, everything came down to the 2nd pair. In a tense and closely fought encounter, Second’s edged ahead to claim the overall victory and the title. The Girls’ competition was equally compelling. Handford and Manor both progressed strongly through their fixtures, and once again the outcome came down to the final match; with Handford having won the 1st pair and Manor the 2nd pair, the decisive tie fell to the Houses’ 3rd pair. In a fitting conclusion to a highly competitive tournament, Handford prevailed to retain their title.Coaches also recognised standout individual performances, naming Franzi K and Preston W as Players of the Day.
