Head Master’s Message: September 2022
The joy and energy of a fresh beginning as we commence a new academic year together has been evident but also necessarily muted by the news of the late Queen’s death and our period of national mourning. It has been right and decorous to adapt our routines and a series of contemplative services, including the solemnity of a full sung requiem last Wednesday, have been at the heart of our reflections. In her Christmas broadcast of 2013 Queen Elizabeth said that, ‘We all need to get the balance right between action and reflection’. I hope you will agree that we have managed to achieve that balance. I have been immensely proud of the school over the last ten days.
These times together, as well as our traditional gatherings such as the downland walk in aid of our partners in Malawi, have strengthened our sense of community and it has been good too to see that so many of you were able to join us. We look forward to welcoming you back very soon. In the meantime, this online update is your chance to share in our latest news, from outstanding examination results this summer, to enjoying the fact that this year marks our biggest Sixth Form yet. I am sure that you will join with me too in welcoming our new staff joiners.
In that same Christmas broadcast Her Late Majesty commented that, ‘With so many distractions, it is easy to forget to pause and take stock’. Together we will continue to reflect on her life of service and dedication as we look forward to the hard work – and the joys – of another Lancing year together.
With best wishes,
Dominic Oliver
Head Master
