Introducing The New One-Year GCSE
Lancing College is launching an exciting new programme in September 2026 – a pre-Sixth Form programme for international students wishing to join Lancing in Year 11 and to have a year of immersive learning and familiarisation before proceeding to the Sixth Form and embarking on our Sixth Form Programme. Students will be entered for 5 or more GSCEs, to be sat at the end of the year
Which students is this intended for?
This course is designed for international pupils who have a good level of English but not that fluency which would enable them to access the Sixth Form curriculum with confidence. It is a preparatory year for the Lancing Sixth Form and offers excellent academic preparation combined with targeted English language development: an ideal pathway to international students progressing to Sixth Form entry.
Entry Criteria
Entry to the course will be dependent on success in an assessment process which will include a CAT4 (cognitive ability test); an interview, a written exercise and assessment of English proficiency, in which students will be required to gain a minimum of IELTS 5.
How is teaching delivered?
In the core subjects (English, Mathematics, Sciences) and for tuition towards a GCSE in their native language and for the (optional) HPQ, teaching will be delivered by specialist teachers for this group of students undertaking the one-year GCSE programme.
Within option subjects (e.g. Music, Art, Design and Technology, Photography, Computer Science), teaching will be delivered within current subject groups, and students will be integrated into these courses and groups from the start of Year 11.
What support will be offered?
All students will have an academic tutor who will guide their progress and with whom they will meet individually once a week. In addition, a course co-ordinator will work closely with pupils and parents.
What is the age range of students?
Students must be aged between 15 and 16 years old on entry to the programme
How are they integrated into the school?
Students on this course are entirely and fully members of the Lancing College community. They are part of a boarding House, under the expert care of a Housemaster/ Housemistress; participate in the full range of co-curricular activities (over 120!) offered by the school and have access to all the facilities and all the sporting, musical, dramatic and artistic and enrichment opportunities of the school. They are members of Year 11 in the same manner as those students who joined the school in Year 9 or Year 10. They therefore have all the building blocks in place to support both their academic progress and their personal development and well-being.
