Junior Concert 2026

On 18 May, we were treated to an enjoyable and varied Junior Concert featuring an impressive range of performers from the Third and Fourth Forms. Sinfonia, directed by Miss Emilie Harlow, opened the evening with two entertaining orchestral works. Johann Strauss’s Radetsky March provided a lively start, followed by a medley of tunes from the popular musical Wicked, which delighted the audience and showcased the ensemble’s developing musicianship.

The concert then continued with a series of solo performances spanning woodwind, voice, piano, strings and drums, offering a wide variety of musical styles and characters. 

The woodwind section opened with Isla K-H performing Rob Buckland’s Free Running. She played with confidence and energy, demonstrating excellent rhythmic control. Beatrice D followed with Pascal Proust’s Icare, producing a thoughtful and expressive performance. Isla then returned to the stage with Paul Harris’s Saxsequential, displaying her excellent versatility. 

 A selection of vocal solos brought some contrast to the concert. William P gave a commanding rendition of Mozart’s O Isis und Osiris from Die Zauberflöte, singing with maturity and assurance. Phoebe B performed Reger’s Mariä Wiegenlied, demonstrating excellent control over the stunning top notes while Luca M produced delightful lyricism in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Time Was When Love and I Were Well Acquainted. Julia M gave an engaging performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Green Finch and Linnet Bird, and Beatrice de Courcy-White completed the vocal programme with a heartfelt interpretation of Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man of Mine. 

The piano performances provided moments of reflection and technical accomplishment. Bea B played Ludovico Einaudi’s I Giorni with poise and musicality, before Charlie F followed with the first movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, producing an expressive performance with terrific control of tone and dynamics. 

The drum section showcased four talented performers. Brandon Z performed Joe Bennett’s Mohair Mountain with precision and rhythmic control. Olivia M followed with a compelling interpretation of Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye, before Sotaro N brought a hard rock influence to the evening with The Cult’s She Sells Sanctuary. Dylan Baldwin closed the set in confident fashion with Queens of the Stone Age’s No One Knows, delivering a powerful and energetic performance. 

The concert ended with a vibrant sequence of string performances. Henry W gave a rich and lyrical performance of the Adagio from Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, before Luca M returned to the stage to perform Barbara Arens’ Tango Habanera, capturing the dance character of the work with confidence and flair. Larissa C concluded the concert with a spectacular performance of Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No.1, bringing the evening to a close in terrific fashion. 

This entertaining and impressive concert highlighted the breadth of musical talent among the younger pupils at Lancing College. Each performer demonstrated commitment, confidence and enthusiasm, making the evening a memorable celebration of music.
