Sporting Highlights – 29 September 2023
Hockey Club News
After a tough cup match on the Wednesday, our 1st XI celebrated an incredible 8-2 win over King Edward’s Whitley on Thursday, with 2 goals from Ava S, and a goal each for Lara C, Hattie P, Kitty H, Claire M and Harriet B.
Further success came on Tuesday afternoon this week when the U15As and Bs also beat King Edward’s Whitley. The U15A won 3-0, with goals from Ava U, Emily S, and Freya T. MVPs were Freya T and Sophia W.
The U15Bs acheived a 2-1 win, with MVPs awarded to Nadiya L and Hattie S.
Hot off the press from Thursday, our U14As travelled to Bede’s for the County Cup tournament. A competitive, nail-biting start against Roedean finished 0-0, followed by a 1-1 draw against Worth. Our 2-0 win over Burgess Hill progressed us to the finals against Seaford. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our day and Seaford secured the win. We are, however, now through as runners-up to the South Regional National Finals (date to be confirmed). A huge congratulations to this promising U14A team. The MVPs from the tournament were Coco M and Bibi W.
Football Club News
An extremely challenging second week to the football season saw both our Junior and Senior teams bow out of the ISFA Cup in tough matches with Buckswood and ACS Cobham. However, our team of the week was our 6th XI who played their first competitive match of the season, winning 4-2 vs local rivals Bedes. In his first match in charge, Mr Cooper’s team gave an excellent all-round team performance with standout individual performances from Finlay W, Haruki U, Fabius W and Charlie S. Player of the week is awarded to Haruki U.
The U15 girls also had their first match of the season, losing a closely-fought encounter with Lingfield. Two goals from player of the match Nadiya L were unfortunately not enough to give Lancing the win, but a good first performance from all of the girls, for several their first ever football match.
Swimming News
Earlier this term, Alessio M swam in the 5k Open Water National Championship, and Third Former Bianca S A won silver in the National 1500m Championships.
Both keen to get back to the sprint races, they formed part of the Lancing swimming team for first round of the Schools Super Swimming League on Tuesday.
Brighton College finished first, Cardinal Newman second, closely followed by Lancing College in third place.
Alessio won 2 races, and both Bianca and Bethany K took a 1st place and came 2nd in two other races. Swimmer of the gala must go to Isaac B who not only won two races in the boys’ intermediate category, but he also stepped up to swim at a critical part of the competition. A big thank you to Girls’ captain, Jorja S, for swimming well and looking after our younger swimmers. A great team effort all round and we are well prepared for the next three rounds as well as the finals in March.
Basketball News
The first match of the term for our Senior basketball team resulted in an impressive 61-55 win over Ardingly on Thursday evening, with MVP going to Jacob L.
In this weekend’s fixtures, the Senior football teams play at home against the Lancing Old Boys and Charterhouse. Our Junior teams are also in action in away fixtures against Charterhouse. The Hockey Club take on PGS Seniors at home, and away for the Juniors.
Good luck to all of those involved!
