Sporting Highlights - 3 March 2023

Girls' Football
U15A vs Bedales school in the National Cup Round 1: In our first competitive fixture for the Junior girls, Lancing dominated the game from start to finish. With some excellent defending from the whole team, Lancing limited the opposition to very few chances during the game. This gave us a platform to progress the ball forward, create lots of goal scoring opportunities and play most of the game in the attacking half of the pitch. With a variety of goals coming from Lily T, Leia P, Harriet B, Nadiya L and captain Romily T-J, Lancing showed a great attacking display that the opposition could not cope with.

Player of the match was Leia P for her dominant defensive display, as well as sparks of her attacking ability. Overall, a 5-1 win for Lancing.

Netball
A great result for the 14As in Saturdays block fixture against Roedean. Right from the first centre pass, Lancing controlled the pace of the match, dominated play with accurate and powerful passing, worked as a team both on and off the court, whilst having the courage to continue to put the work from training into this competitive match. The energy and diligence of every member of this team shone throughout Saturday’s match.

The terrific teamwork between Freya T and Amelia G as Centre and WA continues to go from strength to strength, and valuable interceptions from Grace W, all deserve commending. This, combined with the successful shooting partnership between Grace H and Nadiya L, was essential to Lancing securing 22 goals to Roedean’s 11.

MVPs were awarded to Grace H and Freya T.

Our 1st VII were also victorious on Saturday against a strong Roedean team, with magnificent performances in defence from Claire M and Mia J as our dream team in defence. On point shooting and partnership from Lulu B and Riva S meant that once we took the lead in the first quarter we were able to maintain it and push further ahead. There were strong centre court performances from Poppy S and Isabella H, with superbly timed tips and interceptions from Bea J and Ellie F-S, leading to a Lancing win of 32-27. MVP was awarded to Claire M.

Hockey
1st XI - Mr Janes

The first XI welcomed PGS at home. The game was a very close affair with Lancing creating the better opportunities early on. Will P broke the deadlock scoring a well-placed deflection midway into the first half. The second half brought more positive play from the 1st XI with the team coming very close to scoring a second goal on several occasions. PGS had a penalty corner in the last play of the game. They managed to convert this into a goal ending the game 1-1. A strong performance from the Lancing Boys' 1st XI who were understandably frustrated to not take the much deserved win. Onwards and upwards to Eastbourne at the weekend.
MOTM - Harry S & Jamie C

U15B - Mr Maru
Away against PGS, our U15B boys went down 1-0 in the first half to a well-matched PGS team. We successfully pulled a goal back from a superb counter attack and excellent execution from Luca B, going in at half time 1-1.
PGS scored at the start of the second half, but again Lancing College pulled one back within minutes to make it 2-2 from an Eddie A goal. After creating lots of pressure, Luca B scored his second goal just minutes from the end, to finish the game with a fantastic 3-2 win for the Lancing U15Bs. We look forward to taking on Eastbourne this weekend.
MVP was awarded to Luca B for his 2 goals.

U14A - Mr Mole
In a similar show of fortune to the 1st XI, the U14As had the lion's share of possession during their game, creating good opportunities to score and playing some really slick hockey. The game was decided by a counter-attack from the opposition, with PGS winning a very close game 1-0.
MOTM was awarded to Alex McG.

Football

An excellent weekend of football saw Lancing’s Lent Term 1st Team beat Bedes 2-0, with goals from Magnus D and Josh R. The 2nd team were also victorious courtesy of a last-minute winner from Freddie B. An end-to-end game saw a mixed 3rd team draw 2-2 which meant an unbeaten weekend of football for all three teams.

On Tuesday, the 1st XI were in action in the Semi-final of the ISFA Trophy against Tonbridge School. Having progressed past King Edward's Whitley, Brighton College and Winchester, the final was in touching distance. In a tense and closely fought contest the teams cancelled each other out and could not be separated even after 100 minutes of play. The game could only be decided by penalty kicks, and it was heartbreak for Lancing as, for the second time in as many weeks, we lost the shootout and went out of the competition. Despite the disappointment the team should be proud of their efforts throughout the competition and be pleased with how well they have competed this season.

With one competition remaining there is still the chance of silverware for the 1st XI in the Elgin League.

Tennis
This weekend we have two Lancing College tennis players competing at County level, representing Team Sussex in the U18 County Cup. First team captain Issy H travels to Bromley to compete for the U18 Girls, whilst George H travels to Southampton to compete in the U18 Boys' event. We wish them both the best of luck.

Swimming
Last weekend was the final of the Sussex County Swimming Championships, with Lancing swimmers amassing an impressive array of top three placings:

In the 16 years girls age group, Bethany K came 3rd in the 200m freestyle, and 3rd in the 200m IM.

In the 16year old boys age group, Alessio M took 1st place in the 400m IM and 200m butterfly, 2nd in the 200m IM and 400m freestyle, and finished in 3rd place in the 100m butterfly.

In the 18year old boys age group, James R came first in the 100m freestyle, 200m IM, and 100m Breaststroke. James also picked up 2nd place finishes in the 400m IM, 200m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly and 400m Freestyle.

Well done to Bethany, Alessio and James for all they have achieved over the past four weekends of racing
