Cricket
On Tuesday, the Lancing U15 boys welcomed Ardingly for their next round of the Blackshaw bowl cup. Lancing lost the toss and were invited to have a bowl first. Some tight bowling from Harry S, Ben B, Freddie B, Hugo M and Harvey R restricted the visitors to 150 all out.
A disciplined and controlled chase then took place with a well-made 34 for Hugo M and a match winning 44 not out from an in form Harry C, securing the win which puts Lancing at the top of their group in the Cup and continues their undefeated start to the season.
MVPs Harry C, Harry S and Hugo M.
Saturday 16 May v Eastbourne Senior Girls
Eastbourne set the tone with some consistent stroke play as Lancing rallied to stem the flow of runs. Eastbourne set Lancing a target of 129 to win off their 20 overs with Grace H being the pick of the bowlers with figures 4 overs 3 wickets for 32 runs.
In reply Lancing were staunch in their defensive play but couldn’t establish enough momentum to make a meaningful assault of the target, eventually ending their inning on 106 for the loss of 2 wickets. Captain Harriet B scored a creditable 20 and Sophia W an impressive 29 not out.
Most Valuable Player: Grace H.
Tuesday 19 May v Ardingly (T20 Cup) Senior Girls
Hosting Ardingly in the T20 cup, a game reduced to 16 overs-a-side saw Lancing bat first and post a respectable 107 for the loss of only 1 (wicket) after a massive opening stand of 79 between Bibi W (40 not out) and Emily S(23) put the hosts in the box seat.
Ardingly’s riposte built impressive momentum towards the target before a flurry of wickets involving some outstanding catches put paid to Ardingly’s hopes. Grace H and Bibi W were the principle destroyers with 4 wickets each. A special mention this week goes to a player in the 1st XI Girls’ team who fundamentally impacted the outcome of a close cup match by pulling off a spectacular one-handed catch to remove the opposition’s best player; effectively sealing the win for Lancing College. An act performed by a player who only started playing seriously at the beginning of this season.
Most Valuable Player: Bibi W
The mixed Junior girls’ cricket team put on a superb performance against Eastbourne last Saturday. With various pupils taking some precious wickets before bowling Eastbourne out for a total of 87. This was followed up with some excellent batting performances from Bea D who got some valuable runs to lead the team to victory.
Furthermore, on Monday saw the 15A girls host a highly contested match against Burgess Hill Girls in conditions which were unimaginable for cricket. Burgess Hill were bowled out for 168 for 2 with Maeve H and Theodora G taking a wicket each. The conditions took a bigger turn and made it incredibly hard to score runs. Stand out batting performances were Greta M who got 19 runs, Anoushka M with 18 runs and Theodora G with 16 runs. The Junior girls look forward to more upcoming games after Half Term.
Tennis
On Saturday, Lancing hosted Brighton College in a highly successful afternoon of fixtures. The Senior boys’ and girls’ teams delivered dominant performances in the grass, securing an impressive 16 wins to Brighton’s 2.
The Junior boys followed suit with another outstanding display, achieving 19 victories to 6, with top pair Alex G and William G not even dropping a game across 3 matches. The girls also performed strongly across their matches, earning a convincing 13–5 overall win.
Coaches recognised several standout individual performances throughout the day, awarding MVP honours to Ashley T, Michelle K, Hattie P, William G, Julian N, Lexi P and Kimberly L.
