Sporting Highlights – Friday 23 September 2022
It has been a fantastic week for the Sports Department with full blocks in both hockey and football last Saturday.
Hockey
The girls took on Christ’s Hospital, with eight teams in action. All the U14 teams showed excellent grit, determination, and commitment in what was their first fixture representing Lancing College away at Christ’s Hospital.
The U14As were motivated from the outset and flourished, producing some excellent hockey and plenty of goals with the game finishing with a 6-0 win to Lancing.
The U14Bs’ infectious enthusiasm saw them take 3 goals from Christs Hospital and concede just 1, in what was a fiercely competitive match.
The mighty U14Cs had a nail biting 1-0 loss, which could have gone either way and the U14Ds finished 0-0 despite some valiant efforts in Christ’s Hospital’s half.
Our 1st XI carried on the U14s’ hard work and started strong, with both teams having very few chances at goal; it looked set to be a very close game. The hosts unfortunately scored their first goal late in the first half taking a 1-0 lead at half time. Not to be deterred, the Lancing girls started the second half strongly, putting the host team under pressure from the outset. The game was in the balance and as Lancing pushed for the equaliser on the front foot, Christ’s Hospital put together a passage of play to secure their second goal and we finished with a 2-0 win to Christ’s Hospital.
Of the three home games, the 2nd XI found the going tough against a powerful Christ’s Hospital, with goalkeeper Grace M impressing with several fine saves. The girls showed excellent resilience to fight until the end despite the loss. The home match of the day was the U15As’ sensational play that resulted in a convincing 4-1 win, with Harriet B, Sienna R, Chloe W and Ava S scoring the goals.
The U15Bs fought out a hard earned 0-0 draw, with goalkeeper Anna I earning Player of the Match on her College debut.
Football
A busy start to the football season saw a ten-game block with Bede’s.
An excellent 60 minutes saw our U15A team beating Bede’s until the last ten minutes, when Bede’s bounced back to snatch the victory.
In another tough match our U14A team showed a fantastic attitude and character to keep going to the final whistle in what proved a very tricky debut match.
Away from Lancing there was much success for the Seniors who competed well in all matches. Most notably the 1st team avenged last years defeat with an outstanding performance beating Bedes 4-1. Goals from Ozzy R, Joe C, Harry S and Player of the Match Nana O-N secured a magnificent start for a talented group with huge potential.
However, despite an excellent performance from the 1st team it was our Senior 5th team who took the plaudits of Team of the Week. Managed by Mr Sunderland, the 5ths were rampant with a fantastic clean sheet for Omar M A in goal, and a fine performance from Player of the Match and Star Player of the Week James B.
Finally, we would like to congratulate Henry S, Henry H, Harry S and Seb F who all attended England Schoolboys’ trials on Sunday and eagerly await decisions on whether they will progress through to the next stage.
Other news …
We wish Lower Sixth Former Gabriella S the best of luck this weekend. She will be competing in the OPIDF (Open Platform Irish Dancing Federation) World Championship on Sunday 25 September, being held at The Broadway in Barking.
