Exeat Home and Away: Our First Weekend Adventure
As part of our new Exeat Home and Away programme, our first weekend away offered students a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and community. Designed to provide a true extension of college life beyond the classroom, the weekend was filled with memorable experiences, new friendships, and a spirit of exploration that set the tone for all that’s to come.
Friday:
As the College gates closed behind us, anticipation buzzed in the air. A short drive later, we arrived at Lodge Hill, our countryside retreat nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Surrounded by 35 acres of rolling grounds, the sense of space and possibility was immediate. After settling in, we gathered in the dining hall for a hearty dinner, laughter echoing off the walls as new friendships began to form. The evening unfolded around a glowing campfire, where s’mores and baked cheese became the currency of camaraderie. The simple joy of marshmallows toasted under the stars set the tone for a weekend of warmth and connection.
Saturday:
A gentle 8am start gave everyone a chance to recharge before we set off for the station, just five minutes away. In no time, we were stepping out into the heart of London, the Shard towering above us at London Bridge. The city was ours to explore. From the open-top bus tour, we soaked in the iconic sights: Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, the grandeur of Parliament. Lunch and a spot of shopping gave everyone a taste of London’s vibrant energy, before we hopped back on the bus to see St Paul’s and the historic Fleet Street.
The day’s highlight was a river cruise to Greenwich, followed by an Uber boat ride back to Westminster, London’s skyline unfolding before us from the water. Covent Garden’s street performers brought a touch of magic, and dinner at a cosy Italian on the Strand was the perfect end to our city adventure. As the train carried us home, tired smiles and shared stories filled the carriage.
Sunday:
Sunday was all about slowing down and savouring the moment. After the excitement of London, a well-earned lie-in and a delicious, cooked brunch set a relaxed pace. The grounds at Lodge Hill beckoned for a final round of onsite activities. Archery brought out hidden talents (and a few bullseyes!), while the Leap of Faith challenged us to step outside our comfort zones and trust in each other.
A final dinner together wrapped up the weekend, leaving everyone refreshed and ready for the return to Lancing.
Looking Ahead:
The sense of adventure continues. Our next Exeat will see us journey to Winchester, home to the UK’s largest Christmas markets and one of Europe’s grandest Gothic cathedrals. It promises to be another day filled with discovery, laughter, and shared memories. As the Exeat Home and Away programme develops, each experience is carefully crafted to offer something new, broadening horizons, deepening friendships, and ensuring that every student feels at home, wherever we go.
