Farewell to the class of 2025
The end of a school year and the final week of the term at Lancing are always bittersweet moments as friends, teachers and House teams say farewell (or until we meet again). As with every school, there are traditions that have been established over the years which mark this significant step in the lives of all our students as they move out into the wider world with confidence and anticipation. The strong bonds that are built at Lancing are evident in the deep friendships that continue over decades, the attendance at House and Year group Reunions and the willingness of OLs across the decades to contribute to the My Future Careers programme. This year, the last few days featured four Lancing rites of passage experienced by every Upper Sixth Leaver.
The Leavers’ Service
A much-anticipated whole school Eucharist Service held at 2.15pm on the final day of term. Parents of leavers sit at the front of the nave, behind the Upper Sixth leavers who for the first time are not sitting in their usual House groups in Chapel. The leaving Prefects take a final role in guiding the congregation for communion. This year was especially poignant as we said farewell to a much-respected Head Master, Dominic Oliver. As part of the Service, the piece composed for him as a leaving gift was sung by the choir with the violin solo played by Grace S. At the conclusion of the service all of the leaving pupils (and staff) leave the Chapel together to the applause of the whole school. Whilst across the country there are many Leavers’ Services, there is something truly unique and memorable about being part of this in the majesty of the Lancing College chapel.
Leavers’ Ball
The Leavers’ Service marks the end of term for all students below the Upper Sixth who then remain and prepare for the annual Leavers’ Ball. The 2025 event was the largest ever held at the College with just under 400 guests. Glamour and elegance replaced suits and College cloaks, students mingled with parents and with staff, and the group dined in a beautifully decorated marquee on the Lower Quad. Dancing and fireworks rounded off a memorable evening. See photos from the Leavers’ Ball here.
Exit Interviews
A recent tradition is a one to one exit interview held with each Upper Sixth leaver in the last two days of school. An initiative started in 2016, these provide valuable insights for staff and a timely opportunity for students to reflect, ensuring they leave Lancing knowing that their perspectives have been listened to and captured. This year students have remarked on:
- The usefulness of the preparation for leaving in terms of support for university, personal statements, Oxbridge preparation. They also mentioned boarding life and how it helps students develop independence, time management, and confidence – seen as good preparation for university-style living. Students appreciated being treated like adults and given space to take responsibility.
- Gaining friendships and social skills, friendships were the most frequently mentioned gain, many described them as “friends for life” or “amazing connections.” Students appreciated the diverse community, making friends across year groups and from around the world. Many reported improved social confidences, communication skills, and empathy.
- The Lancing Community being a significant strength fostering a close-knit, welcoming, and supportive environment. The House system, chapel services, and shared events (e.g. Founder’s Day, Leavers’ Ball) help create strong bonds across year groups. Many described Lancing as feeling like a second home or family.
The Leavers’ Gift
Marking their imminent joining of the OL community, this year leavers received either a Lancing tie or a newly designed Lancing neck scarf. The 2025 Leavers have previously met many OLs through their time at Lancing and recently at various Careers events and school visits. Joining the OL community is something Leavers look forward to, knowing that this is keeping them in touch with the school community. The next opportunity for them to be together is an event for the Young OLs, (under 30’s) which takes place in September – date to be confirmed.
