Head Master Welcome – Advent 2026
Aristotle says that we become just by doing just acts and brave by doing brave ones. Our pupils have had plenty of practice already this term.
It began with the Malawi Walk. In the first Saturday of term, hundreds of pupils, parents and staff walked twelve miles along the South Downs and raised thousands for our partners in Malawi, in the year of our twenty-first visit. Our link with Malawi has run for four decades now, and the turnout showed how much it still means to the community.
You will also meet this year’s Heads of School, Prefects and Peer Supporters. Much of what they do goes unseen: checking on a younger pupil who seems low, settling a minor dispute in a House, or simply being someone others can talk to. Some of it takes real nerve, such as telling a friend that they have made a mistake or speaking up for someone when it would be easier to stay quiet. I am grateful to them for taking it on.
Elsewhere there is news from the classroom, the stage and the sports field, along with some pieces on wider intellectual and cultural life that I think you will find well worth reading.
Do look, too, at the events still to come this term. There is a great deal to look forward to, and I hope to see many of you in the weeks ahead.
With all best wishes,
Dr Scott Crawford
Head Master
