Lancing College Celebrates World Book Day With Award-Winning Author Catherine Grey
World Book Day at Lancing College is an annual event that brings together students, staff, and authors to celebrate the joy of reading. This year, we were delighted to welcome award-winning author Catherine Gray to speak with our Upper Sixth students. Best known for her books The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober and Sunshine Warm Sober, Catherine shared her experiences as a writer and offered invaluable insights into her journey as a writer. The Q&A session, hosted by Lancing College teacher and author Dr Christy Edwall (History Keeps Me Awake at Night), provided an engaging and thought-provoking discussion around themes of sobriety, relationships, and Gen Z’s approach to drinking culture in the UK.
Beyond Catherine Gray’s visit, the College community has embraced the spirit of World Book Day with several initiatives. Our Student Library Assistants have created House Book Boxes, which were distributed to each of our Boarding and Day Houses on campus. Each box contained a World Book Day voucher for every student and a selection of books to establish a swap shelf in their House.
Meanwhile, in the Gwynn Library, our wonderful team of library staff have built a creative display that invites students to celebrate their favourite books. Each participant has been asked to write their favourite title on a leaf and tied it to the book tree display in the foyer. As an added incentive, five students will be selected at random and win vouchers for Fives Café!
With these initiatives, Lancing College continues to nurture a love for reading and storytelling among students. We look forward to hosting many more similar events and celebrations for all the book lovers in our community!
